Clivia and evergreen clematis

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I wasn't quite sure which forum to post this in, but decided here would be good. I have this clematis armandii and clivia that were both blooming at the same time and wanted to share. This clematis is evergreen, has grown to the top of my green house and is still going strong. It belongs to a friend that wanted me to propigate it, but so far no luck with any method. It is very fragrant when it blooms.

Both are very pretty. I just received a couple of clivia starts from Dee. I know there is no need to be anxious, but waiting is hard. I like all the clematis. Someone told me a year or two ago, to take cuttings long enough to put six inches of the cutting into potting mix. She said about half of hers always root. Might just be that this one is like some of the passifloras......nearly impossible to root.

I will try taking the long cuttings then. I thought for a while that the tip cuttings would work, but they just withered and died. I've tried layering, old wood cuttings and soft wood. I think I will try air layering next.

I have started the large white(Henri), by laying stems down, breaking, so bottom of stem is cracked, cover with dirt, next year had shoots out from original plant, cut between. I have Niobe(red), divided plant into three, traded one, still have two plants, so may divide them this year, if they get big enough.

I've tried that too, still no plant. These don't go dormant like the others, they are evergreen. They were blooming in early March. I've left the layered part, and will give it till next year I guess.

Come on down CC, but the floor is a bit wet from the rain we've had. I might be able to clean off a small space on the heat mat to keep you warm at night.

Tonight it was BBQ ribs, tater salad and baked beans. I was thinking steak for tomorrow, or enchiladas. Which do you prefer?

Oh boy Cala, am I gonna get fed like that when I come up in Jul??

Sure, I'm a pretty good cook and try to make each meal different so the family doesn't get bored. Sometimes the recipes don't turn out right and we order Pizza!! My daughter loves pasta, so have gotten good at making lots of pasta dishes too.

Cala,

I've had good luck with evergreen vines by dipping the cuttings in rooting gel, potting up and placing them in a sealed big plastic freezer bag. I then put the pots on a heating mat and they root in 2 weeks.

I forgot to add that I used softwood cuttings.

Joydie, this is funny. I was reading your other post and just thinking I would try that!!
I also talked to a friend from the University and he said this one can be started by taking the cuttings at the 3rd node below the flower, dipping in the gel, potting up and keeping the humidity high!! I hope I can remember where the flowers were, this thing is 10 feet tall now and taking over one whole corner of the green house.

Cala,
I broke mine off where the new shoots emerged from the main stem...I read somewhere just within the past week that cuttings that are just broken off from the main stem work the best for all plant material.

OK, I will try that too, this thing has to be ten feet long and has lots of stems.
