Here she is-same age seedlings. The larger one was simply allowed to grow in a 1 gallon pot from the 27of feb to the 27 of march. You have to take into consideration that it was moved from the same seed tray and hence shocked so it is not as big as it would be if it was started in a larger container.
Finally, proof that size does matter.
Good illustration of what you have been saying all along.
I transplanted most of mine to larger pots and have been amazed at the difference.
i even root mine in large pots, seems easier to keep the water stable and they take off growing much faster. of course, if you are doing zillions you can't do this. glad you have the camera out, brugman.
Good example Eric. I've gone through four compressed bales of ProMix in the last three weeks trying to get everything into big pots. They grow so fast that I bought lots of seven gallon pots thinking I won't have to repot them before planting them out. The problem is I have discovered my 12 x 20 greenhouse is not near big enough and they are quickly filling it up.I'm praying for an early spring with no late frosts but that seems unlikely with four inches of snow still on the ground. :(
Size has always been important! Come to Texas!
Size does make a LOT of difference. The plants that I've transplanted into larger pots are doing much better than the ones I've had to leave in the starter cells.
Snowhermit - I'm in somewhat the same boat. I don't have a greenhouse though, but I have a kitchen full of growlights. It's starting to look like a jungle in there. I informed my family tonight that we would no longer be eating at the table, since I got 24 hostas that need to be potted and they are taking the kitchen table. The kids don't care, as they'd rather eat in the living room anyway. DH said that someday soon we need to figure out a way to get me a greenhouse. LOL! That's the kind of response I wanted out of him! He's either slowly getting into gardening and landscaping our 5 acres, or wants his house back!
We still have snow on the ground too, but we got some rain yesterday that melted a lot of it. I am SO hoping for an early spring so I can at least put some of these plants outside during the day.
Joan, we haven't eaten at the table in a month or more, isn't it awful!!! (not) I'm putting as much out tomorrow as I can, just hope we don't have anymore bad weather, and I have to bring them back in, that's a job!
Funny, tiG, we have two tables for eating and haven't been able to use them, as flowers all over!!
Maybe SOON???
LOL. Won't the men be happy when we can actually slap a steak on the KITCHEN table instead of on TV trays in the livingroom.
but hey, it's supposed to get me a greenhouse, so it was worth every single time I cleaned up dirt off the floor. Actually, I even hinted to Mom about having Easter dinner at her house cause I have no where else for the seeds. (didn't tell her that!! ) good thing she said yes:)
I'm working on packing this house full of plants in various stages of growth....It was an accident...I'm new to this and didn't know they would grow so fast...Think of how pretty our yard will be...Well gee, they were so cheap...
Oy Vay! It's getting to hubby, I can tell, (and hear), and that means I'm one step closer to a greenhouse. LOL! I think the straw that breaks the camels back will be when I put tomato plants on the headboard of our bed. I'm not to that point yet, but getting close.
Brugsmansia - I am so sorry that your thread got hijacked. I do agree that the size of the pot makes the difference in the plant size.

Now what do I do? My greenhouse is full too. Still have half of the kitchen table, but every other table, window ledge and available space that a plant can get light, is filled up. I agree with Eric about the size of the container....I have two sangs, one in a 5 inch pot and one in a two gallon pot. The larger pot has a plant that is about two feet tall and the smaller one is only about 7 inches tall. Both planted from seed at the same time and germinated within a week of each other. Problem is that I don't have enough space in the house for all the big pots, so they are mostly all in a "holding pattern". Must say that my greenhouse is only an 8 X 10 or 12ft. but when I built it I didn't know a brug from a hole in the head. Good luck you guys with getting your greenhouses built. I know there is life after flowers, kids, and grandkids, but I haven't run across it yet.
