ants in pot

montgomery, AL(Zone 7b)

I have what I was told was an Angel Trumpet. It is coming up again this spring. It never bloomed last year. I am new to this so don't know anything else about it. There is ants in the pot. Will they hurt it & what can I do? Also something is eating the new leaves. What is the best thing for me to do for this poor plant?

I put diazinon in the pots when they get ants. Kills em dead, but it also makes the leaves very narrow and thickened for a time if one puts too much in the pot. Bayer Rose systemic insecticide works great for Brugs by the way and it feeds as it kills the insects. It can get expensive though if you have lots of Brugs.

Brug,
I'll look for Bayer Rose systemic insecticide but not sure I can find it here. Lowe's & W-M are about the only places I have to look & they are almost 30 miles away(going today). Is fireant killer the same thing? Do I spray the
insecticide on the leaves or dirt? I'd sure like to see blooms this year. I have some Datura seedling & I think they look a lot like them too.

Sugar-Fl, i use fire ant killer on mine, can't think of the name. you might want to think about taking it out of the pot, washing it, and planting it in the ground with lots of peat, you'll get blooms quicker. that's what i would do.

Walmart and Lowes carry both. Diazinon is also the main active ingredient in many dry ant killers like fire ant killer etc.

Hi,
I got the Bayer Rose systemic insecticide. I may plant the brug in the ground though. I see it is good for aphids too. My Mums have aphids on it so guess I'll use it on them too. I have some Datura seedlings.. I read it is Jimson Weed. Gee we used to kill that in the fields in CA. It sure sounds dangerous from what I'm reading on it. Do U know if it spreads by seeds ONLY? I think I'll have to TRY & keep it dead headed for sure. I'll have to let one ripen but will put a nylon on it to contain it. Am I fooling myself thinking I can keep it from spreading *grin*

SugarFl, yes, if you contain the seeds, it won't spread. If you want brugs, I'm sure there are lots here who will have some to share soon.
It could also be snails/slugs that are eating your leaves at night. You can use snail bait, crushed egg shells or diatomaceous earth to control them. They come out in cloudy weather and at night to eat.

Calilily,
I would sure like some more Brugs..I have never seen a snail here (hope I never do) I had them bad in VA so I know what they are like & what they can do..
I can see aphids on the chrysanthemums, I guess that is pretty common for them.
