This one seed pod I've been babying all winter is really puzzling me. All winter it's been about the same size, that of an over-large okra pod, and quite firm to the touch. Yesterday I was checking on it, and suddenly it's somewhat soft to the touch. Not like it's rotting or anything---sort of like a peach changes as it ripens. The peduncle is beginning to turn brown, but it's still firm, and the pod is still very firmly attached. How far am I from picking day? And no, I don't have any NuSkin, so don't tell me to cut a window in it, LOL!
Remember, this is my first and I don't want to screw up!
Yet another seed pod question
Its ready to pick now.
PICK IT!
Are you sure you don't want to cut a little window in it just for the heck of it? I can't believe you had the patience to let the penduncle turn brown!!
When I was at Valley Grow, I couldn't believe he actually had some pods that had turned brown.(I didn't have the heart to tell him he didn't have to wait that long to harvest them and he wouldn't turn his back long enough for me to cut a little window in the pods)
Way to go Judith!Congratulations on your first seed pod.
Congrats to you Jude! Mine didn't make it because I cut off them limb...Did you dig yours up and move it inside? I think that is what I'm gonna do this year!
Ima, you can also cut the limb with the seed pod off the main tree and root it. I leave about a foot of stem below the pod, stick it in a pot and keep watered. It works.
Whoops! I kept mine in a glass of water to root and it died...:(
I'll try your method next time!
The parent plant was already in a pot---I didn't even know the pod was there until after I had the plant inside! It's a thousand wonders I didn't cut that limb off when I was cutting it back so I could get it thru the door, lol.
Okay, so it's ready to pick---what do I do next? Shell out the seeds and let them dry, or what? Can I take a few directly from the pod to the soil?
Ms Batt, I would definitely plant some when you open the pod! but that's just me, have had over a 100 seedlings come up from where i opened pods and dropped seeds...didn't think them viable. it would be nice if you could plant a few where you intend them to grow. who is the mom?
I agree with Arlene. I followed her advice and they come up a little faster when they are fresh.
Mom is Frosty Pink, dad is an unnamed white. The hummingbird moths were the matchmaker, lol.
Hmm, that brings up a good question...do you give credit to the moths when they pollinate as the hybridizer or do you give credit to yourself for only having those two for them to hybridize with? I have 3 seedpods from the neighbors Brugmansia that were pollinated via moth from pollen from my hybrids. Of course I have no idea which pollen the moths chose as I have more than 2 Brugs. I think one should give credit to the moths and the person who planted the plants personally. Perhaps say hybridized by Moth, plants chosen by (Name of person goes here).
so they'd be MH's huh?
