Original Nova of its breeder, Mme Neu

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

Only Novas mother is known, a pink B. suaveolens. The flower resembles much Glockenfontäne, a gardenform from Colombia. The flower length of Nova is 30cm, Glockenfontäne 40 - 44cm. The leaves of Nova are not so lanceolate as of Glockenfontäne. Latter has dark green leaves, Nova not.

If I had to guess it looks like the father was a pink versicolor. Perhaps Ecuador pink? It trully is a beautiful and very full pink. Not like so many hybrids that have the bottom few inches in color and the center or top white. Do you think this particular hybrid shows any other species Monika? What is your oppinion about the Insignis species? Do you think its a species unto itself or a cross between versicolor and suaveolens?

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

Ecuador Pink was introduced to Germany in 1998. Nova is a hybrid of 1986. Mrs. Neu had rare sensitive species, that flowered well in the mild climate of the vinegrowing part, where she lived. In all crosses, there was never a equal looking hybrid. The narrow lanceolate leaves of Nova and Glockenfontäne are almost insignis like, but the flower differs. It has much of a versicolor that for sure.

Monika,
Thanks for the info on Nova and Glockenfontäne. I purchased Glockenfontäne late this past fall and have not had the chance to see it bloom. It grows fast and roots easily. I was interest to know if the skirts on your Novas hold up well. I may not be expressing it correctly. My Nova flowers collapsed easily--did not hold their shape. I do live in a very hot and humid climate, which may explain the reason.

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

Bward, there is no chance to use Nova nor Glockenfontäne for breeding purposes. Both plants are completely sterile. They produce no pollen either. Mme Neu told Mme Blin and me, that Nova is the mother of L'Amour. None of us have been able to get seed pods on Nova. Mme Blin and Mme Neu were very good friends and we accepted Mme Neus information, as there can always be an exception. It doesnt matter, as the other parent, Rothkirch is known and L'Amour is a outstanding valuable hybrid.

Monika,
Could it be that only the first flower from this cross was fertile? I know the first flower on some of my hybrids look much different than the very next flowers and this is why I ask.

One other question, have you tried slicing open the anthers to get some of the pollen out? Could the seedpod be rotting before it even begins to form? I have noticed a few hybrids that will do this. Hence, if one can keep the seedpods from rotting one might get a seedpod. I have found that I can get seedpods on hybrids such as this....

Cold and snowy day here so I'm doing some re-reading. Nice to see who the parents of L'Amour are. Maybe I'll remember, this time. :-) This picture of Nova is a beauty.

Just gorgeous, Monika (o:
Excellent photo, also (o:

Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

Im doing some back reading here (also) only 1 year later... this is a beauty!

Do I have this right? Nova is the mother to L'Amour, and Rothkirch is the father? She does not produce pollen at all? (So she would have to be the mother??)

IF one could pollinate Nova again, (besides Rothkirch) what would be another good father?

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

Shelley, it has been impossible up to now, to make a successful pollination on Nova. She is sterile.

It sure is a pretty one Monika.

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

Thank you. Nova is a heavy bloomer but needs also suitable climate. She loves it a bit warmer as other Brugs.

Marshfield, MO(Zone 6a)

This paler pink color all the way up the corolla is incredibly beautiful. Look like I need to put that one on my wish list.
