need help with banana

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

I got a huge banana tuber? and it's time to plant out. How much of this do I plant in the ground, in other words, do I bury the whole thing or does the top touch the surface. Help! I don't even know how to phrase the question LOL!!

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

Tig, If it is the one you got from me, just stick it in the ground leaving the top tip out of the ground. Really, they will start to grow even if you don't plant it. Water it a lot, and back up cause it will grow fast. I would put some fertilizer on it. Next year you'll probably have little baby banana plants. Roz

My neighbor puts epsom salt on her finger banana trees and they FLOURISH! She just sprinkles it around and waters in.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

thanks Dale, I've just started using epsom, and hope I don't forget!!

Tig, also, there will probably be more than one banana to come up from your big bulb. I mean one banana tree, that is.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

hey, that's even better!!!!!! LOL!! you'll have to let me know what to do when winter comes, I do NOT want to lose this!

Tig, just dig it up, whack the leaves off and store it where it's cool but not freezing. Some folks here store them under their houses for the winter, then pull them back out in the spring.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

while the leaves are still green?

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

Tig, I don't do anything to mine; the leaves will die back and it will look like a nuclear accident but when it gets warm, I cut them off and they come back just fine. Sometimes when I throw the dead stalks in the woods by my house, they will root and come up! I let my grandkids saw them down with a toy saw; they just love being lumberjacks. I usually cut them back to about 1 foot. You are in Georgia, though, so I am sure it is colder there, so you may want to listen to Calla.

Paxton, FL(Zone 8a)

Hey Roz,
Mine did start shooting out green leaves and I still haven't planted it either. Trying to figure out the right place for it. I like things that grow fast. Thanks loads.

Cala, Haven't forgotten seeds for Lauren, I'm gonna make her something and haven't got it done yet, just gonna send it all together.

Banana trees freeze and turn an unsightly brown where I live, but they always come back for more punishment the following year. They just keep coming and coming...really, theres no stopping a bananna tree once you get it started. There about as bad as most Brugmansia.
