I am in the process of making permanent tags to mark my brugs(and other plants) what comes first ?Variety?Species? What order do they go in to be proper?Or is it my own perogitive?
brug ID tags
CC, what are you using that will be permanent? I'd like to do the same thing so that I don't have to make new ones every year. Thought I would hang mine from the brug trunk so it wouldn't get lost.
My DH got me some kind of metal, not sure if its aluminun or tin, something they use on tractor trailers, anyhow ,he cut the metal into 2 x 4 inch peices (aproximatly),I bought an engraver at True value ($10.50)and some thick copper wire on close out at Home depot.I'm gunna bend the copper wire into shape (after I remove the plastic coating),and bend the edges of the tag with the vise, when I line it all up ,I'll bend the tag more to clip it tight to the wire.Hard to explain.I wanted copper for the tags too,but besides being expensive it will get a patina on it that may make it hard to read.
Brugie - The PawPaw Company has the cheapest metel labels I've come accross http://www.everlastlabel.com/ I bought a bunch last year for daylilies. It might be worth it to buy a 1000 and split the cost with a few people. I bought 100 last year and you go through them fast. Didn't know I had that many plants!
Poppysue,
I'm thinking about using the mini blinds and punch holes in them to tie to my brugs. I've used the ones you put into the ground, but the brugs are the only ones I really need to mark correctly and keep them marked. I still have those metal ones that I could have Jim drill a hole in and then I could wire them on. I didn't find that the markers held the names very well. Maybe I'll get an ingraver too. I don't think I want to spend a whole lot of money when I only need about 40 permant type markers. My perennial beds have been cut down to only one and I know what is in them, maybe not the names of the lilies, but I don't think I ever did know their names. :-)
Brugie label the plants in this order: Species, variety, color and I then put when I first got them and where they are from.
:-)
Brugie - I've had good results using pencil on the mini blinds. I had a nice paint marker but the tip got kind of squishy after using it a while. A regular hole puncher for paper works good on them too.
I use pencil on mini blinds too, although I hadn't thought of punching a hole in it. I just stick mine in the pot.
Shirley,
I agree with the last two post....Mini Blind and pencil.
I have some short tree tags. They work like a plastic garbage tie, you put one end through the slot on the other end and pull to tighten. They are soft vinyl and I thought they would be good for marking the seed pods with the parent plants name especially if you want to pollinize pods on one plant with different pollen.I'm also going to put them on each plant with their name before they get planted outside.Last year my plastic markers in the ground got covered with mud every time it rained.
Glory, when are you leaving on your trip? Guess I thought you had already left. Back when?
Shirley
Shirley,
We are leaving Wednesday, 27th at noon from New Orleans and will return 11 April.
Glory, have a great time. I just wanted to be sure to have time to get your package to you when you get home so you will have it in time. Hope you find some great flowers down under. :-)
