Does anyone here grow this particular water lilly? Nymphaea caerulea? It appears that it has a rich historical past as well as it is stunningly beautiful to me.

From this article it appears that the only reason this one is still around is because of its conservation in botanical gardens.

It looks like you can purchase them from this site, but I may be wrong.

The last article is a bit more about the history of the Blue Lotus.

CrestedChik,
I must confess that is why I posted it. If anyone was to know about this one or grow it...well, Kyle comes to mind first. I love plants with a rich heritage or past. This one seems to have exactly that and its beautiful on top of that.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

do you have a pond Eric?I love mine, and sometimes when I forget to water the brugs I drop them in there.....

FSH, TX

CC, I don't have a pond, but I was thinking of getting a wooden barrel and trying to rig it somehow. I haven't done any water gardening so it would be a first for me. I am trying to read snipits here and there. Not sure how to keep the algae down and the mosquitoes as well though if I start one of these in a wooden barrel. As you can tell I don't know anything about water gardening.

Oh it would be so great to be able to help YOU instead of you helping US.I grow my lotus and some of my tropical lilies in containers.I throw a few guppies in the container to eat the mosquitoe larva. The leaves keep the water shaded so algea isen't a problem here,it might be in Florida because of the heat

Brugmansia,

Many stores now carry plastic moulded liners for half oak barrels. Look around and you may well find one.

Eric, I have this tropical blue waterlily. I keep them inside in the winter on the heat mats(in that tub with the duck weed in it). I've got one promised to Country Bumpkin and may have an extra. They are still very tiny right now and I was waiting for warm weather to send it(it's too cold to plant it outside here now)since I don't think it likes to get chilled.

If brugman doesent want it I'll beg for it!

I grow this lily also. Have babies starting now. Just posted a pic of my bloom on DG. Take a look at the bloom. A friend gave it to me and it is now producing babies from the seed.

I am new here, but watergardening is my passion. I am in zone 8 in Texas and I grow waterlilies in muck buckets, kiddie pools, just about anything that will hold water. I love it. I have very little problem with algae in the Texas heat and don't even have to keep fish in my buckets. I can't swear to it but I think the tadpoles keep the mosquito larve in check. If I notice a problem I just throw in a fish for a few days and no more mosquitos. It's addictive. You've got to try it brugmansia.

Your link at:
http://www.seerosen.de/blaue.htm

is a German company translated as "Sea Rose" Farm.
I had sent an email to them 13 months ago, but got no response. I had a neighbor help translate my message to german but no response yet.

Also looked at the site: waterplants.com but could not find the item for sale there either.

Am looking to try to grow the Egyptian Lotus and have not had any luck. Need to aquire some seeds or a live plant. Can anyone help?

Thanks for the quick response. We are new to Dave's Garden, and an interest in architecture and archeology has led to an interest in preserving Nymphea caerulea.

Best wishes to all.

Wonder..thats my interest in it too..I have a bedroom that I'm doing as an ancient Egyptian motiff..so I got some silk water lilies to put in an old style vase in the room.I love how the paintings in Egypt look just like the profile of this flower.

I ordered Tropical waterlily Leopardess from Van Ness this spring. It is just now looking pretty good but no buds yet. I had a different purple tropical a couple of years ago and loved it, but have a problem trying to keep over winter. Maybe the idea Calalily suggester would work for me to keep it on the heatmat in the winter in the greenhouse. Don't they need a rest period. Donna

Received my plant from waterplants.com a couple days ago. Price was reasonable, but the shipping was about the came price as the plant. Should've ordered two perhaps.

A little ragged around the edges, but in good health. The plant that is... Am looking forward to growing it. Will need to set up a temporary water garden in a sunny place till I can dig another pond. Thanks all for the help finding the Blue Lotus.

Only got a two month membership at Dave's. If anyone needs to email me months later, I'm at g.wheeler@worldnet.att.net .
