biscuits? not cooked in oven?

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

Oky, so I'm a weirdo. However, I'm a nice weirdo! And I love biscuits! Yrs ago I distinctly remember eating biscuits around a campfire, and they came out of what some of us would call a Dutch oven.
I have lots of cast iron skillets, pots, and one really nice deep pot w/lid that resembles a Dutch oven (but is not really considered one).
I was thinking of trying to bake some biscuits in it. I could try it on the stovetop to get the feel of it so that when I am (hopefully) camping this summer I can make on the campfire (whoops, sorry...meant to say "campfar").
I'd thought about just barely oiling the pot (oven), putting in the biscuits (lining the bottom and lower sides), putting on the lid and putting it on the heat. (If on the gas stove I'd use a "waffle" to deflect the direct heat. If on the campfar I'd set it on the coals and move other coals around it it.) (Lots of Dutch oven experts, with a real Dutch oven, would heap coals on top as well.)

Question is: Has anyone actually done this themselves? Would anyone even think of trying this? Care to expand on this? Or give hints, tips, or critique?
I'd love to hear some input!
Thanks folks!
