Variegated potato vine

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

this is the potato vine that I bought. It doesent grow like the sweet potato vines. The tag says Solanum jasminoides, fast growing twining vine which remains nearly everblooming in mild climates. Can I grow this in a hanging basket?Or do I need a trellis?

Cool plant. I've never seen one of them before. Almost looks like it will climb.

The regular solanum jasminoides climbs to 15 feet. Sounds like you'll need a trellis.

they will grow in the bigger hanging baskets too, maybe 12" ? not the 10"

they will grow in the bigger hanging baskets too, maybe 12" ? not the 10". You just won't get as many potatoes though. But I would think that it would already be variegated, the small ones I saw this past weekend were. And my blackie and marguarita (sp) already show their colors as soon as you can see the first leaf.

tiG - I think your thinking of Ipomoea batatas [potato vine]- the morning glory family. This is Solanum jasminoides - belongs to the nightshade family. This is a good link http://www.desert-tropicals.com/Plants/Solanaceae/Solanum_jasminoides.html

Crest,
I grow mine in a 5 gallon pot with the largest tomato cage submerged into the pot..This works really well, the plant spills out over the top and down the sides, I just keep twining it around and trim once in awhile. Mine blooms almost non-stop, year round..

CC, you better try taking some cuttings when you trim this baby up. You know who would like a start of it this fall.

I should have lots of new things to trade. :-)

CC - I just got one of these at a local garden center. It's real teeny weeny right now. Can't wait to see how it does. I got a blackie tater vine too :)

Sue ,mine seems to be growing pretty fast,it was tiny too.I tried starting the potatoes I saved last year,I did what they said on the posting that tig had and stuck tooth picks in it and let it sit in water. There are 4 of them. One is growin, puting out shoots, lots of roots.I keep pulling them off, sticking them in water and they root in days! Its amazing. The other 3 taters are just sitting there......Mine is the lime green one.

I wanted that lime green one but they didn't have it yet. She said they have it coming tho. I didn't know they really made potatoes!

I'll add 2 to your box! They make little reddish potatos....

We are using a ton of these this year in outdoor pots in the downtown area.Makes a great color and texture contrast for Petunias,coleus,impatiens,etc... :-) and boy does it vine...may need pruned.
