Where is Spring?

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

This seems to be a particularly bad year for temperature fluctuations as Spring attempts to arrive. My daffodil, tulip, and hyacinth bulbs popped out of the ground over a month ago. Since then, they have been struggling with the rising and falling temperatures, ice, and snow. I guess they are pretty hardy and will eventually make it. The leaves are still green except for some brown tips from the occasional frigid temperatures. Spring is officially here now, so let's get on with it!

Noblesville, IN(Zone 5a)

I have poor little daffys up and they are asking for jackets. :)

Same here, sure getting weary of it all!

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

The freak ice storm left some of mine on the ground, but the majority are just now bursting open in all their glory!!!!

It's so hot down here, we have had to turn our air conditioner on. Tied a record the other day, in fact. It's in the low to mid 80's each day. My daffs need a cool breeze. :)

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

Honibee & Sis, I know this is spring in the midwest. Wouldn't it be nice for once though to have a smooth transition from cold to warm without all the up and down?

Eyesoftexas & Smiln32, I envy your warm weather now, but I won't once summer hits. Right now though I could really go for some warm rays of sunshine! Spring fever has definitely hit.

Fayette, MO(Zone 6a)

My poor daffodils have little ice jackets on today. bummer. Come on Spring!

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

Mine got hit by the ice storm too. I don't know if they will recover from this or not. I'm hoping so because I planted a bunch of new bulbs last fall and was really looking forward to seeing all the flowers this spring. Any opinions on whether these spring flowers can survive snow, ice, and freezing cold yet still produce flowers?

(Zone 5a)

We seem to have a spring like this every year, so I won't plant any spring bulbs. I have lost them every year to weather like this, I am just hoping that my poor little Stella d Oro's make it. They were looking beautiful a couple of weeks ago but since the ice and snow storm has hit us they look as if they might not make it :(

You want to hear something funny? Well two weeks ago I saw the first butterfly of the season and thought that was a sure sign that spring was going to be kind this year....yea, right!!

Greenville, SC(Zone 7a)

I have Elderberrie shrubs that are leafing out everywhere and also clematis starting to bud, thought the cold temps a few days ago would kill the new growth, But, everythng is still doing fine ( Thank God! ) I can't wait untll Spring is actually really here so I don't have to worry so much about the plants!! Last year, We got a real late freeze in Spring and it killed all the buds on my Westeria's and tulip tree!!! I hope that doesn't happen again this year!! Let's all keep our fingers crossed for Spring to actually get here to stay!!

(Zone 5a)

Iris I will keep my finger crossed for you and I would love to see a picture of your Tulip Tree in bloom, I don't think I have ever seen one.

Whew, think ya'll got it worse than we did, keeping my fingers crossed for you too'
Same here freezing rain but didn't last the other night' My daffys have blooms(still closed)as do the hyacinths(1 bloomed so far)The iris in my barrel is fine, tougher than I thought they were and Stella is green and looks ok but could be iffy, only her 4th yr.now.
Every year get drier so we'll do more xeriscapeing(sp) and containers this year,no choice very arid conditions here and drought also' Hurry up Spring' Sis'

So sorry to hear about your Stella O' Doro's , Don't give up hope yet tho, They might suprise you ( Keeping my fingers crossed ) ~ I'll be happy to send you a pic of the tulip tree when it's in bloom ~ The blooms look just like yellow pond lilly's, It's really neat!!

(Zone 5a)

Sounds beautiful but of course it would be, its a tulip and they are all lovely, thanks and I can't wait to see it.
Good news I hope...NO MORE SNOW AND ICE OUTSIDE, AND MY STELLA' ARE LOOKING GOOD...THANK GOD!
This is the fourth year for my Stella's and they should fill out the whiskey barrels to profection...YES!!!!
It is still kind of cold her but the sun is shinning and that give me new hope.

Nmax I hope that your getting some sunshine as well maybe some of that snow will go away for good and we both can get on with the planting and sore behinds lol.

GREAT NEWS WIND'''HOPE MINE MAKE IT TOO'
Think it may be very close,80 degrees,ac is running now, lol'

Nmax not sure if yours will make flowers' Some of my daffys with blooms also hyacinths were also ice laden awhile' We just have to wait and see, good luck'

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

I think there is hope that they still might flower! With warmer temperatures and sun forecast for the next several days they just might make it for Easter. That would be appropriate wouldn't it on the day that we celebrate resurrection and rebirth!

Antrim, Northern Ire, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

maybe it's here with us. Spring arrived about 4 weeks early for us and has stayed mild ever since. this has been a fantastic year for bulbs and I cant remember daffs looking so good.

Good news!!! My Stella's made it through and are looking good, no blooms yet but stong plants. I have started to plant my seeds outside that how sure I am of spring. Now if only this little bad squirrel will stop diging up up my seeds trying to find bulbs. He is even getting in my containers, I guess I'll have to go to the store and buy him some corn and put it out so he will leave my seeds alone.

Still here in Wisconsin wondering where spring is. it still gets 30 here at night.

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

It is definitely Spring here now as I can tell from the constant rain. Either it is going to stop raining, or I am going to have to pull weeds in the rain before my flower beds are completely overtaken.

(Zone 5a)

Nmax, I know the feeling, I have all my seeds planted and only have to plant a few more plants as they arrive in the mail. If this rain doesn't stop, my backyard will be flooded again this year. It has been rainning for the last four weeks everyday and it's rainning now as well. My grass needs to be cut so bad but to wet to do anything about it.
One of my stupid neighbors was out cutting grass in the storm yesterday, we had severe thunder storm warnings over most of Ohio. I wouldn't risk my life just to cut grass.

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

Windsurffer,

I am anxious enough that I briefly considered cutting the grass in the rain this weekend, but quickly decided that it really wasn't worth it. I just have to set the mower to the maximum cutting height whenever I do get a chance to cut it next.

Wish I was as far along as you. My only flowers are the perennials which are desperately trying to make themselves seen through the strangling weeds.

(Zone 5a)

It will do no good to cut it now, as soon as the rain comes again it will be back to the same length or at least that's the way it seems.
