Me and TraciS were talking about our brugmansia's and we are both new at having them this year. We have seen lots of pics on the net, where these things get HUGH! and most of what we have seen were all in some sort of container.
Now here's the question: How can we get one to grow that big?? Is it because it is in a container? and taken in and out of the weather? or could it be that the zone it is in is the reason for it?? Is it possible to get a hugh Brugmansia to grow in the ground?? I told her that I was probably going to plant mine in the ground and then let it grow all season then take cuttings from it and bring them in the house for the winter. I am open for instructions here, since I am soo new to these still.
TIA

Question for the experts
Molly, I have this one in the ground.http://davesgarden.com/showthread/113509.html
Mollybee....size of the pot does contribute to the size of the plant.I have had plants get 12 feet tall in a 20 gal pot.I have had 9 foot tall plants in 5 gal pots..it depends on how much and often you feed your plants and don't let them get TOO dry in between waterings. If you plant your trees in the ground they should get 10 feet tall and about 8 feet across the first summer. If you are zone 8 and higher they can overwinter in the ground..as long as the ground doesn't freeze. They may die back to the ground..but will come back up like gangbusters in the spring. :-)
Wow now that is impressive!! So you still have that same one in the ground? and it comes back every year! Wow!! I have a orange one too, and I would love to see it get that big. So you don't do the container thing?? I think I might just try one in the ground and one in the container, that way I am surely to get a good size plant. from what I am reading, they pretty much like part sun/part shade...right????
Mollybee..they prefer sun.....
O Eclipse! you have been a hugh help here!!! Thanks for all your helpful info, I hope TraciS see's all this. I am so excited about these things!! I just know I am going to love them. I will be sure and plant them in the full sun and I think I already have my spot picked out for it lol
Thanks again!!
Molly, you can plant them after last frost and they will overwinter for us. you are a tad north of me, but if Cala can do it, we can. You might want to protect from the worst of our summer afternoons, I put mine where they get a bit of afternoon relief. I started my first cutting the first of June last year. One foot, no roots. It bloomed for 2 months in the fall, over 5 ft.
one question, are yours seeds or cuttings? most seeds take 2 yrs to bloom.
tiG! you mean you don't remember sending me some cuttings? I did somehow manage to keep 3 of them alive and they are now about 2 1/2' tall!!! I can't believe I kept them all winter, but I think I will be able to plant them outside in a couple of weeks. I think I have found a new love hee hee
I simply can't wait to see them bloom for the first time.
Yea seems like your weather is a little different than mine, strange though ain't it?
LOL!! I do now:) actually I think I'm probably colder than you. something about the weather coming in from alabama, but even among our neighbors, we're a bit colder. but we're not colder than Cala. They need to be in the ground all summer to be able to stand it though. When you decide those 3 aren't enough, call me. Johnnie Vaughn, welcome Sargent rd, newnan, in the book :)
Racing to get the phone book!!!! LOL :) no really I think I do have your # around here somewhere. But I think that me and TraciS and Jackie are going to try and get together in the next couple of weeks, why don't you join us?!! we'd love to have you and your cuttings LOL :) I really do want to get some more from ya if you have one to spare. and if you can't make the meeting, then I would gladly send you the money for postage. O and that reminds me...I still owe you some asparagus fern!! Do you still want some??
LMK b/c the weather is getting warm enough to send plants!!
oh, you girls better not get together without me!!!!!!! I might have the grandbaby, but she's real good, just let me know! yes I do want the fern, and I can bring cuttings!
We wouldn't think of getting together without you! and a chance to meet that darling grandbaby...wouldn't miss that for the world!!!! I will talk to Traci in the a.m. and I will let you know the exact day and time. Far as I know we are suppose to meet at Jackies house (I think) but I will call you or e/mail you the details as soon as I know for sure. Sounds like it's going to be a fun day!
Waaaah, I wanna go too!! I meant to bring you some of these asperagus fern seeds to you Tig when we went to Fla. I worked all day today in the green house and finally made room for everything I got at the swap.
Molly, guess you are wondering where those seed are, I found them on the table, along with the directions to Florida, lol. They made it to the car today, and I will get them in the mail tomorrow. If I had a brain, I'd be dangerous.
Cala, are you guys knee deep in water? All we hear on the news is how TN is having horrible flooding.
O now Cala, you know we would LOVE to have you join us!!! Traci and I have been busy running all over town today trying to get some info on that old bronze buddha that I have and needless to say we never got around to talking about the get together. Any plans to come out our way anytime soon?? If so let us know so we can all meet somewhere.
Molly, I would love to come visit, but if I don't stay at the green house long enough to help get caught up, DH might fire me(hey, that might not be bad, then I could garden all day). Maybe in a few weeks I can come visit and I will let everyone know. Of course, y'all are welcome to come see me and I will share my plants with you. I have a passiflora "Lavender Lady" that must have 200 buds on it.
Oh Calla, I'll bet she will be gorgeous. You will have to put a photo on one of the other forums. I don't know what happened here, but just couldn't get them to root. Did finally get some corkscrew vines to root though. Now, if the brugs will just grow, I'll be okay.
Ok Cala, I am going to hold you to that hee hee. Just be sure and let us know the when and where K? Yea I guess you are right about staying home to work that ghouse, with all your special touches those plants will be growing like wild! I agree with burgie post us a pic so we can see that passifloia, sounds lovely!!
Cala, I have some wonderful passiflora pictures. Interested to see them? Tell me, where to post them.
Monika, we would LOVE to see them. You can post them on the Photo's Forum. Hope you and DH are feeling better.

Monika there's a vines & climbers forum too. I'm sure everyone would be thrilled with your passiflora pictures.
Also Tropicals Forum, can post Passiflora pics.
I seen to remember seeing Monika's name mentioned in the Vanderplank Passiflora book as a breeder. Would love to see the pictures Monika
Now why does that not seem to surprise me.
Monika do you have any of the all blue passifloras? My workplace just joined the International Passiflora society...
Kyle, my Passiflora time is over. I had to give all my plants away in 1990. My DH was hospitalized for almost two years. Since the Brugmansias have always been my first love, the Passifloras had to go. At that time, I had almost 150 varieties. I crossed B. coccinea with B. caerulea Constance Elliott. The chromosomes didnt fit, only one of the many buds opened. I have a picture of it.
Monika, yes!! post photos, I would love to see them. If it's possible for us to send passifloras to you, I'm sure in our group we could get you a nice collection together.
Molly I went out today and checked the ones I have in the ground and they all have new growth coming up except the ones in a raised bed. I have the raised bed really really mulched so they will put out when I pull that back. Mine have never grown real tall. I think they hit that red clay and the roots can't go any deeper. That was the reason I started some in the raised bed. I'll let you know if they grow taller in the raised bed.

O Jim I sure hope they do good in the raised beds, because that is about all I have is raised beds! But I also have a hugh pot that I am considering putting one in too, so I guess I will have to do alot of experimenting this year and surely by this time next year I will be a little wiser about all the how to's. With luck and finger's crossed of course lol.
