air orchids at the swap? sorry to put this in the brug forum, but was afraid the right person might miss it if I put it somewhere else. I need to know what to do with them, or the Latin name. Thanks so much.
To make sure this is in the right forum, just want to thank the brug group again for a great weekend. And for those of you not there, we really did miss you and Dave's!!
who brought
Are you talking about the poor man's orchid or walking iris (same thing so I've been told)? If this is what you're talking about, Dee had some and so did I. Don't remember if anyone else did. The latin is neomarica gracilis (according to Logee's catalog). Hardy zone 10 or higher. Exotic blooms only last a day, and a new plant forms on the stem and bends down to the ground and takes root. I have never tried any in the ground, just kept them in pots. Fills a pot up wonderfully and you'll be giving them away to anyone who'll take them.
the tag says air orchid. Going to plant like above and when it flowers I'll post for id if it's not the same. thanks Pam!
As long as we are off topic here I have a couple of questions.Who gave me a nice vine with buds.It is blooming now with blue flowers about 2 inches or so.I lost the tag if it had one.It is in a gallon pot and had a single heavy wire for the vine to climb on.
What is it.Very beautiful flowers.
is it a blue sky vine? I know there was one there. thunbergia grandiflora. I thought you were the one giving it away, maybe it was you taking it??
tiG--does the air orchid have fan shaped flat leaves like an iris but a darker green? If so, it may well be the walking iris/poor man's orchid.
Oh, gone2seed, if you don't want that ugly ol' vine, I'll stop by and pick it up sometime.

I got a yellow "Walking Iris" (Air Orchid)- from Gloria - I gave her a blue one. I usually put mine in the ground so they will spread, but they do make very pretty baskets. Tig you'll have to mark it to remember to dig it up in the fall here.
what would be good to put in a pot with them?
Maybe airplane or spider plant for color. even some impatiens.

I have the blue one and a similar type that has white flowers. I think RedRose posted it on the ID forum a while back. I thought it was walking iris too, but it spreads by rhisomes and not the hangy down things that the blue one gets.
Boy, I don't come here for a couple of days and miss a bunch of stuff. We've had such nice weather here so DH and I took this week off, to do so "yard" work. Today we tilled up about 1/2 acre and got some things planted. Still have a long way to go yet.
tiG, I brought some "air orchids". They are also called walking Iris I believe, these are white with a little blue in them. I have them in hanging baskets, and they make really pretty ones at that. Now down here I keep mine outside, but bring them into the greenhouse once it starts to get really cold. There rhizomes tend to get really thick, which you can divide or plant the 'flying babies'.
gone2seed - I brought the "blue sky vine" it wasn't for anyone in particular just whoever wanted it. Guess you got huh! It is the 'thunbergia grandiflora' and yes it had lots of buds on it. Hope you enjoy it.
Can any one tell be what though little roots are I think dee was passing them out of a baggie but I am not sure
