not a great shot but heres the 3 brugs I'm trying to graft.they still are not attaching to each other.they have been like this since december.Do I injure or scrape the stems so there are wounds that heal together?
trying the graft
CC, that should look really cool when they are grown. I haven't tried anything like this yet. Still toying with grafting the way Eric has written about. The mood will strike one day. You go Girl!!
CC.. here is the link where Brugman discussed grafting... http://davesgarden.com/showthread/205406.html

never tried grafting before... ma vie
CC as the trunks get thicker they will graft into each other it will just take a little time when they start to grow
Pete
I agree with Irish, I think they just need a little time to grow together.
OK thanks guys.I just keep stripping the leaves so the get taller.
They will grow together so to speak if left to grow in that form, but that is not a true graft. For a true graft one has to scrape or cut the outer tissues so as to allow them to grow together and actually share tissue...ie, when you see a tree that has been wounded and calloused over...thats what you are going for. A true graft on a Brugmansia only takes 2-3 weeks to form during the spring and summer months. Another 2 weeks to become a bit more stable though. Still, at 2 weeks one should be able to tell the two tissues have clearly grown together.
okay, I have NOT had enough coffee yet, but if I graft a white and a pink, I'll have both color flowers, correct????
Yeah tiG, you will have both colors, but don't you think three would look even better? I've just got my mind set on three for some reason. Think I want to go with two colors of pink and a white. I'm going to do it one day. Just have to find the day and the right size brug.
Eric
What are the advantages of sharing tissue? I am trying to understand this so be patient with me. If one grafted three individual plants together, do they each flower individually as if they were their own plant? If grafted will they all grow at the same rate or do they retain their own growth characteristics. It seems that sharing tissue would change things and I would like to know what changes take place. Are there any differences between grafting small plants side by side compared to the grafting of branches?
Brugnanny-If they share tissues then they also share food resources and hence grow faster. I have not noticed that they have bloomed at the same time though. In fact, those grafted pieces I have grafted all appear to bloom on their own individual times. Of course, I have never kept a single plant I have grafted whether it be a cacti I have grafted or a Brugmansia. I have always gifted them away. I have had the luxury of visiting some of the grafted plants I have made for others...under the pretense that I was visiting the caretakers of the plants in question of course.
lol brugman....
Not to mention the fact that if you simply wrap the cuttings around each other they will grow much slower than if properly grafted.
See ,I screwed up again...just can't trust me alone with the brugs when I have time on my hands....The ones I planted here are:unknown white ,Jutner Orange, and a S.pink
just trying to figure which ones I can try this with and wondered. Won't they Y at different places?
Probably, but it will just add to the oddity...
No CC, the braided look with a few grafts in it would look very beautiful indeed. Even just one graft in the top of it....
Eric, if I graft them instead of braiding, will they Y at the same height?
ooooohhhhh a variegated one right in the middle!!!!and maybe a butterfly and ...........
If you grafted three whereby they shared tissue, would all three need to have the same growth habits. If not, isn't it possible that you could have small and large parts of a tree? i.e. one side being much smaller than the other if that brug was a smaller slow growing type.
I could probably counteract that by pruning, but it just proves i can't be trusted to do anything right
CC, I'm glad that you are trying this method, braiding. I've read about it and always thought about doing it, but never had tall skinny brugs to braid. Did you use seedlings? I'll bet it will be a great conversation piece and will look forward to seeing it in bloom. Hey, who knows, they might all bloom at the same time. Wouldn't that be a sight?
S.
Its actually not braided,I started out braiding them, didn't like it so I unbraided them and just twisted them together, taped them top and bottom and just keep winding every time I see new growth.
Guess I didn't look closely enough, but at a glance, it looks braided. I think they will look great.

Crestedchik..I think its gonna be an awesome plant when finished..I may try one of these this summer
