O.K. I need help with an i.d. I would post a picture but don't have one. At our historic house a lot of daffodils and irises are coming up. Well, I also had something come up with much wider leaves than daffodils normally do. They are rounded on the tips. I don't know what they are because they are so crowded and won't bloom. I was surprised to see that the bulbs were large enough, however. They are sitting in my living room in a bucket, with a little water and were suposed to be planted by now but the weather went nuts and here I am with 20-degree weather in NC after the first day of spring! Is there any help out there?

Would this also include daylilies? They aren't really bulbs but are sorta close. And there are soooo many beautiful ones. I have 25 due to arrive next week, am still digging a bed to plant them in.

Hi MaryE. Daylilies are definitely friends of the bulbs, certainly!!

Hi everyone! I had a couple of packages come in yesterday. They're bulbs I ordered mail-order. One of them is bulbs in the green. Couple of problems. Firstly, it's absolutely pouring down here at the moment and my beds are soaking. Secondly, my beds aren't all prepared. I've been waiting to get my fences done and some digging and it's taken longer than I thought. I can't even dig in the beds where the new fences are for almost a week because the concrete is still setting. I haven't even unpacked them yet. There's some with a little bloom on them, but essentially they're for planting so they get established and settled in for next year blooming. Any advice? Will they keep for a few days in their packaging?

Woodspirit - could they be hyacinths do you think!

Greenfield, IN(Zone 5b)

Dave - We LOVE you!!!

Northerner - can you plant them in pots until dormant, then plant in place for next year???

Woodspirit - I have something like this and don't know what it is, I will run out & take a pic real quick & post in plant ID.

MaryE - we have just started a co-op for daylillies - interested???

OK I posted the pic of the possible surprise lillies under plant ID.

Rapid City, SD(Zone 5b)

I meant to post this as a new thread, sorry...

My hyacinths are coming up and are about 2 inches tall - I was suprised to see them before the crocus! Daylilies are also showing.

It is still freezing hard here - but I see spring is on its way! The birds are back and singing their little hearts out.

This fall I planted 75 daffodils, 75 narcisus and 100 scilla. I haven't see any sprouts from these guys yet tho. I am so excited to see what they will look like!

Yes. I saw some at a nursery and asked. They are Surprise Lillies. My husband prefers the name Naked Ladies. I wonder why?

Hello dignbloom. My bulbs in the green are lifted in the spring. They're meant to be planted in the spring. If I transplant into pots I think the shock of the different transplants will set them back. The weather here has some sunshine later in the day but it is cold, windy and damp and the ground is soaking. It needs several days of sunshine really. The bulbs are wrapped in newspaper. I may have to check the bulbs tomorrow and give them some fresh moist newspaper. The worst thing for them is drying out. It's the reason, or so I've heard, why it's better to plant snowdrops in the green. I planted some snowdrops in the green a few years ago and some of them took off ok. My packages contain snowdrops, winter aconites, bluebells and a type of narcissus. They're really meant just for planting and establishing this year, not for flowering.

Just a comment on the naked ladies...our pastors wife heard them called this. They are growing next to the church steps. We arrived at church that Sunday to see she had made paper dresses and taped them on all the stems! No "naked Ladies for our congregation!

Montrose, PA(Zone 5a)

I planted some Snowdrops in the green Four years ago and I think every single one came back. In fact there in bud now. If we ever get some sun they may come out!

MorningGlory - May I ask where you purchased your snowdrops "in the green"?

Sanbornton, NH(Zone 4a)

I'm repeating myself (from another thread) How can I get my bulbs to divide and fill in space?

I have a question concerning the bulbs my hubby bought home that he had gotten for 1/2 price. Have Glads,Canna's, and Lily's. I need to know if I can store these in the refrigerator until I have the time to plant them and for how long will they keep if not planted? Please, anyone out there that can help me, would really appreciate it.
Thanks

Trumpet Lillies

I have these beauties and am wondering how to keep them from standing up straight. They get quite tall and tend to bend over. Should I stake these or is it something I am doing incorrectly w/feeding.

Jackie

Hi,
Stake the trumpet lillies. I do this to a lot of my tall lilys.

Sue

I have 3 lilly plants. I don't know what kind. They bloomed orange, very small flowers. The plants themselves are dying back but where the flowers were there is a bulb-like bump and black seeds? Can these be propagated by these black seeds? I though lilly's grew from planted bulbs.

Thanks
nancy

Antrim, Northern Ire, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

if the black bumps are possibly bulbils which are baby lily bulbs. Plant them now, individually, in 3 inch pots and in 3 years you will have more flowering lilies.

From your description, you could have blackberry lilies or candy lilies. Does the seed ball look like a blackberry? If so, you can plant the seeds or let them self-sow and you'll get more plants

Antrim, Northern Ire, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

blackberry lily sounds very interesting. does anyone have a photo and /or bulbs?

Mark

Mark & bulblady2000

Thanks so much for the info. Unfortunately I don't have photo but will try and find the tag that came with the plant. The seeds look exactly like a blackberry. I will try the potting in pots and see what happens. Can I set them outside next spring? I live in Zone 5, Wisconsin.

Thanks again,

Those are the plants.
We saw these plants at the Brookside Botanical Gardens in South Carolina. I was very happy to find them at a local nursery at home.

Thanks again.
