My First Brug from seed has emerged!!

Good morning everyone,

To my delight I checked the sunroom this morning, just thinking that things might need watered and to my surprise one of my Brugmansia Sanguinea has popped up.

YAHOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Got them from Rapture and they have only been planted for about 3 days. IS this unusually Fast?

Brugmansia seedlings are incredibly variable. I have had Brug seeds that actually sprouted after a full year in the ground. Congrats on your sanguinea seedling. I have grown them from seed and from cuttings, but I have never got one to live this far south for more than 2 years. I know how exciting it is to have seeds sprouting though...just had a single seed from a friends mixture sprout for me and I can't wait for the leaves to unfold.

Crystal,
Isn't it exciting when they sprout. Congratulations and welcome to the group.

Way to go crys!! Now the real fun begins for you. I know how you felt this morning. It is a thrill, to say the least. Welcome to the group and I'll be anxious to hear how the sang grows.

Where is the best place to get the Sanguinea seeds? I wanna try one more time cause thats my DH's favorite brug....

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I got mine from Banana Tree Farms, but you have to buy $8 worth of stuff in order to get anything from them. I think the sang seeds were only about $2 for 10. There must have been 11 in the package because I had six come up and gave the others to tiG. I don't know how hers did. I ended up with three that lived and they are looking really good now.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Do you have a email address?Or web site?

Milton, FL(Zone 8a)

ValleyGrow is a good source.I got about 25 seed for around 5.00.Germination was fairly good, about 60%.

Hi Everyone,

Thank you for all your comments and Liz...... I dont think you need to come to me for brugs LOL ( but I do go to vancouver once a year)

CC, just do a search for Banana Tree Farms. I don't think I kept the web site address. You might want to consider G2S's suggestion to go to Valley Grow. Earl is very accommodating and will get your seeds right out to you.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Crys, congratulations on the seedling!!
CC, watch on ebay, I got my seeds there from a lady in the NW. Ten seeds were 2.99 plus postage.

Crys - you never can tell. I have sanguineas from about 4 different sources. They all look different from each other. The problem with sangs is that there aren't a lot of names out there for them. Mostly you see pictures of various different coloured blooms - they have names, they don't usually say anything about the different leaves.
If I remember my years of living back there - make sure you keep them out of the humidity and don't let them in the 80F heat.
PS - why do you come out here once a year?

Thanks for the extra advice Liz.

Didnt realize that the sang were different I thought that they were the smaller reddish looking type that only grow from seed. Infact, I really know nothing about them. Got that Idea from the picture that rapture shows.

I visit my mother-in-law she lives in Ucluelet ( on the Island). Thinking fall this season.

Then you'll be up near Brugcrazy

Sounds like a shopping trip for Brugs to me!!!
Crys.

My hubby is shaking his head at me. Just the large 5 cutting I have doing well are taking up alot of room. And I dont feel my passion for them letting up so soon I picture a very tropical looking sunroom.
Cry
( oh and a empty wallet if I dont slow down.)

Crys, I have hundreds and hundreds of brugs. I just had a new 18.5 x14 ft. x 11.5 ft. high conservatory built for the Tropical room as the greenhouse is overflowing. LOL You can never have too many brugs. They are truly addictive.

Brugcrazy,

NOT FAIR ( I am stomping my feet in a fit) LOL!!!
How, why??? Are you a brug seller or truly just addicted.

Can't even imagine what your tropical room looks like full, Must be wonderful.

I am really having fun with my first cuttings and first seedling popping up. I will be so excited when I get a bloom.
Just discovered them last season and daturas and when the purple datura bloomed I screamed.

Cutting available when???
Crys

Crys, I am truly addicted and have been for 7 years or so. I supply a few speciality nurseries on Vancouver Island. Trying to get the rest of the world addicted to brugs.LOL

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

Congrats Crys. I have my first brug baby now too. It's exciting isn't it? Yours germinated so fast! Mine took over a month. I still only have one, do you have more yet?

Joan - Congrats to you too. I know it sure was fast, but none of the rest have popped up yet. Makes me feel impatient about the rest.
Good luck with it, hope we both get it to grow without trouble.
Crys

Brugcrazy - its working!! Im getting addicted. First it was simply gardening and now its moved on to specific plants.

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

Crys, I too have my first brugs growing from seed. I finally have them under lights. I am hoping that the lights will be their salvation. I had some seeds that I got thru Arlene who got them from Eric, and he is a breeder of repute in this area, and apparently breeds for blooms the first year! I am so excited.
I think I will try the sangs next. need to check out some of the sources listed above.

Good luck with yours, and keep us posted.

Hi Pebble,

Isn't this fun. Congradulations to you also for having some come up from seed. Lucky you to get some that will bloom the first year. I just cant wait to see blooms, my cuttings should have blooms so that will be nice. Guess I will have to be patient for the rest.
I got my sang from Rapture and they seem to be good. Today I have 5 little babys trying to break the surface. And my hybrid seeds I have about 6 now. None have true leaves or anything like that yet, but they are comming along.
YAHOO>
Keep us posted on yours and I will too!!

Sharpsville, PA(Zone 5a)

congrats! it took mine almost exactly one month to the minute to sprout. and with in another month... it was about 3 inches tall...Maybe yours knew it was the first day of Spring!

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

I'm going to take pictures tonite....
they have grown gangbusters after I put them under lights.
I am soooooo excited!

My first one poked it's head out today! how neat. now if I can get it to live to be grown.

south of Grand Rapid, MI(Zone 5a)

had my first sprout in 11 days and now it just sits there - not doing a thing. It looks so sad. Aren't they supposed to grow by leaps and bounds?? All 40 other seeds are not doing a thing. I have even taken to poking around in the dirt looking for the seed. I am so depresssed. What in the world am I doing wrong???? I want some brugs sOOOOOOOO bad....

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

I took Calla's suggestion and gave them watered down miracle grow. Like a 1/2 tsp to a gallon of water, this may have helped mine(I'm sure they did)
Well, I got some film over the weekend, and loaded the camera, and lo and behold it was black and white film, then my batteries were dead.....arrgghhh
Will try again this weekend to take some photos of my seedlings, they are working on their 6th and 7th leaves now

Hamilton, Canada

I give my seedlings fertilizer. I have some of Eric's seeds and the first lot of seeds planted early February are over 6 inches tall and very nice looking. I fertilze every time they need water.
