Un-sprouted seeds

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

I'm wondering if I should hang onto the my flats that still have a lot of un-sprouted seeds. Most were planted into cell-packs and the ones that have sprouted were all transplanted into 4" pots. I still have lots that never came up. Should I hang onto these trays and see if these slow-pokes germinate?? Or are these seeds most likely goners if they didn't sprout with their siblings? It's not like I need more plants... but I hate to trash them if there's a lot of seeds that are still good. What does everybody else do?

Poppy, I've still got some that never came up. I planted them all the end of Dec. I was going to throw them out and noticed a seed from the VG mix had sprouted.I'm going to hang on to them for another few weeks and see what happens.

I have a whole flat of seeds(not just brugs) that never germinated. They were inclosed in a garbage bag to keep them moist. Some where I recall someone saying certian garbage bags have a chemical in them to keep bacteria or molds from growin.I just thought about it when I realized that NOTHING in that bag germinated.I dug up one of the brug seeds and it was rotted.Think I'm gunna dump them.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

after it seems they've stopped sprouting, I dig around and see what's in there. Most times all I find left are rotted seeds. I have done that and found 2 good seeds, I peeled them and planted and they came right on up. Glad too, it was a great Ins Gold x Bfly cross that I'd really wanted, so I gained 2 extra seeds that I wouldn't have if I hadn't dug around.

CC,
are you using green garbage bags? if so why not expose the seeds to light...maybe its a lack of light they are suffering from.

This may not be a good practice, but I dig around in the unsprouted pots, pick out any seeds that aren't rotted then dump the soil in the top of my big brug pots. I've had a few sprout in those pots and haven't noticed any problems from doing this. After all, it was clean soil till I sowed the seeds in it.

No joydie,it was the large clear ones that we use for recyleing soda cans.

Some seeds take forever..I have had some that didn't germinate for months then just as I was going to reuse the soil here they come!! so patience is a virtue with brug seeds.

I'll hang on to the trays until I need the space... which maybe very soon - lol.

CG/JO usually takes 4-8 weeks and I'm still waiting on the suaveolens to sprout. It's not just suaveolens of my own plants, but from others too. One finally sprouted last week. Versicolor seeds seem to come up faster.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

I'm back to having them sprout within a week!!! love it!!!!!!

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

TiG, can I send you my seeds and let you sprout them? Of course, I would have to come visit them, lol.

This from the "death to brug seed person" - I planted some on March 6th - starting to come up today. 4 days!! Yay!! Hear that Brugcrazy?? For those of you that haven't heard this - I used to ship my seeds to Brugcrazy because I was a lost cause. I feel like I've graduated!!

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Wow Liz, that's got to be some kind of record!!

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

I feel like such a failure. It has been 15 days and narry a piece of green showing. They are checked several times daily, talked to, sung to, but as of yet nothing... I will hang on tho in high hopes of something happening!! I think maybe I used too heavy a potting soil....

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Sarv, it depends on what vairety they were. Some just take longer. They will come up when they are ready.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

that's right, don't give up. different crosses, different ways we all plant, warmth, light. but you might have just the perfect one, so dont' give up on it!! LOL!

Liz, I think you definitely have graduated. Congrats. Now come and pick up all the seeds I started for you so I have more room for my own. LOL

FSH, TX

Ahh, well I finally had some very precious seeds germinate...not my own...and only one is popping up so far...but I am excited none the less.

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

Poppysue, I planted some James seeds in a six pack on 12/29. One came up on 1/27 but it was headless and died. I just looked today and I have two more coming up in the same six pack. There's still hope for your seeds.

Liz,

Well you need congratulations and a partayyyyyyy. Good for you! Isn't it exciting? I killed the first lot that Cala sent me. Boy did I feel bad, then I got the hang of it and there is no stopping me now. I'm going through seed sowing withdrawal...LOL. I want more seeds. I'm so greatful to those who have shared. What a wonderful group!!!
