posted in another forum, but y'all will surely know. I got a metal halide 250 watt light from son for Mothers day. Need to use it NOW, but how far above seedlings should it be??

It should be 18 hours north ,over my seedlings,LOL

CC you are too funny. TiG, I believe that Brugcrazy has them. She will be able to answer your question.

tiG, I have a 400 watt one. I kept it about 6-8 in. above my plants because it threw off lots of heat.Brugcrazy can answer better since she uses thenm all the time.

snow, how big an area does that one light cover? DH is convinced that if it's that low, I won't be able to use it for much. Now we're thinking that we should use them for my bigger brugs and all the other lights for the tomato seedlings. whatcha think, we need help here:)

Tig, a 250 watt metal halide bulb should be above your big brugs and seedlings on the side. It will cover a 8X8 area. They produce quite a bit of heat, so not too close to the plants or you'll burn the leaves. If you also use florescent "grow bulbs" which are sodium, then you get the perfect mixture for growing and flowering. I use both in the greenhouse. Experiment. Nice son, he must really luv his Mom.

brugcrazy,

which light source is for growth? sodium or metal halide?

brugcrazy is right. The 400 watt one covered a large area and I fit all my plants under it with no problems.

Joydie, the metal halide is for vegetative growth and the sodium is for flowering. Best to have a mixture of both for optimum results.

CC,
You are so funny. LOL

Tig, forgot to mention that I had my larger plants and cuttings under the 400 watt light and my seeds and seedlings under 4'florescent grow lights. This worked for me because the leaves of the larger plants produced too much shade to grow seedlings on the outer edge.

how high above the plants, last question, I promise:)

tiG - I have 2 1000 watt high pressure sodium lights in a 20x20ft space. Probably overkill but they are hard-wired into the ceiling on a 24hr timer. Plants on the floor seem to do just as well as the raised ones on tables. The lights on raise the GH temps by approximately 10 degrees F. I am not raising seed in here though - just rooted plants and transplanted seedlings. In other words tiG - these are not immediately over plants like the shop lights would be.

cool, thanks Liz!! I'm going to use my grow lights for the seedlings and the MH for the bigger brugs.

tiG, Probably a few pages back there is a picture of my light with the Brugs under it.
