Experimenting again

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

OK folks, I've been at it again. I've had brug seeds soaking in various chemicals. I'm taking notes and will let everyone know how it goes. Some were to enhance germination and some are to change the chromosomes and some I tried just because it sounded like something that might work. (and one is because I spilled coke on the seeds and thought "what the heck, it just might work") I lost 2 of the tissue culture flasks but one is still hanging in there. My little teeny cuttings have started to root, I was so surprised. I lost 2 out of 25 in one "mini green house" which isn't bad. I will keep everyone posted.
No photos this time, my hard drive is just barely hanging in, got to get it to the PC Dr. soon before it crashes and doesn't come back.

You GO GIRL!!! I'm so impressed with all your experiments.
can't wait to see the photo of the itty bitty cuttings you took.

What I want to know is what a culture is?

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

I'm so excited about this,I tried to get my sister(she's a chemical engineer)to explain this stuff to me but I'm still still clueless.I don't care,I still think its great and I love being in the company of genuis!!!

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

forget the seeds, get that computer fixed!!!!!!!! (good luck with the seeds too:)

Ewing, KY(Zone 6a)

I see the Doc is at it again. Susie you amaze me. I will keep watching to see how this turns out. I wanted to let you know I got your seeds today. Thank you so much for sharing with me. You are bound and determined to get me hooked on brugs aren't ya? :)The cuttings you sent last year are holding there own and the one you brought when you came is doing good too. SO I have 3 already. I just planted the 2 different kinds of seeds I had and now I will soak the ones you sent and get them planted too so I might have a nice collection soon.(I hope) So don't mind me if I keep lurking out here and checking in once in awhile.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Some days I wish my computer would crash so I could get a better one. Only problem is that I don't know if they make enough floppy discs to copy all my stuff to. Yes, this computer is almost 4 years old and full of brug and other pictures. Would hate to lose them, but love a new puter.

Glad you are having luck with those tiny cuttings. I don't know if I would be patient enough. Hope you get your puter fixed quickly.

Calla - Coca Cola? The world is waiting for a dark brown brug with little white bubble spots ~

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

Calalily...Saltpetre..is used as a soak for Chile pepper seeds to help diffacult varieties germinate..so I may try it on Brugs seeds this spring..will keep you advised of results.

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

Calalily..have you used Colchicine to change chromosome levels???

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Eclipse, I'm using that, kinetin and caffeine. Of course these are separate batches, not mixed all together. I had some Promalin, tried it several times using distilled water and when I added the brugs I got a precipitate every time. Any ideas? I've tried all kinds of stuff, even soaked some in an abermectin solution. Y'all will probably laugh when I tell what all I'm using to experiment with!! I've even got some soaking in a mixture of IBA+NAA+B1.

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

I might laugh if I had any idea what you're talking about. LAMI (laughing at my ignorance)

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

ROFLOLATLIZ!!!!!!!!!

Good one Liz. Chemistry wasn't my forte either, Fine Arts Major. LOL

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

LOL Liz. I'm in the same boat. Looking at Cala's post trying to laugh but sitting with a dumb look on my face saying duh IBA?NAA?? B1??????? HUH? What is that stuff???

Changing the chomosomes??? WHAT??

This is just to much for a newbie to handle. I was impressed with myself when I had a cutting root.LOL!

18th century prose and poetry here - what can I say? - head in the clouds when it came to the real world.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Peggy, I know you will do good with those seeds!! It won't be long before you have that green house full of brugs.
Snowhermit, IBA is indole-3-butryc acid, NAA is napthaleneacetic acid/napthaleneacetamide depending on the formula and B1 is vitamin B1 in liquid form.

Cala, keep up the good work, I'll paint the pictures of your fabulous experiments. Deal?

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

And where in the grocery store do I find those chemicals Calla???LOL

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

CC, welllllll, I got the caffeine at a convenient store, the IBA+NAA+B1 I got at Wallyworld, it's made by Shultz, some of the chemicals I ordered from a green house supply place and some you have to get online from Sigma. Look at the labels on plant rooting hormones and you will see the ingredients. The Kinetin is in a couple of tomato blossom sprays.

FSH, TX

Yes indeed. SuperBloom2 if memory serves me has Kinetin. I was thinking of using that and Ga-3 to spur some crosses this year. Used GA-3 last year by itself....

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Brugmansia, I have it mixed with benzaldenine which is a cytokinine. The only problem I encountered with it is that it wants to form a precipitate when used with CG. I tried it with EP and it didn't. I think the brand I bought for the kinetin was made by Green Light. Kinetin is also in skin care products and is used to reduce wrinkles and soften the skin. Hmmmm, wonder if my brugs will have soft, smooth skin? Another effect of the benzaldenine is more lateral branching since it promotes lateral growth. Wonder if this would cause the seedlings to bloom earlier?

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

Cala - you have me intrigued. What branch of chemistry were (are) you involved in?

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I majored in Organic Chemistry. I didn't like working in the tiny lab plus Grace moved out of town, so I went to work in a green house. I haven't used the chemistry much except for what few chemicals we use and to adjust the pH of the water. I do some of the soil and all of the water tests at the green house just to keep from forgetting everything. I wish I'd at least taken some genetics courses or maybe botany but at the time, I didn't know a petunia from an impatien. One of my professors had a blueberry farm and he developed a type of graft. He got me interested in growing plants and I attempted grafting dogwood. I bought a book on how to grow perennials and it snowballed from there.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Wish I had just a pinch of the knowledge you have. It all sounds so interesting, but I'm over the hill now and probably couldn't remember one chemical from another.

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

Well - I think it's wonderful that we have a resident chemist to steer us in the right direction. Everyone here probably has some sort of background in helping us grow better brugs. Now all we need is a brug psychologist.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Yes, what more could we want. Cala as our chemist, Kyle, Eric, and Monika as the hybridizers with the most experience, and all the rest that have gained the experience to do just about the same things. Now, we wait for the final results. Can't wait to get started.

Tyler, TX(Zone 8a)

I'm going back to growing Beans and taters in plain ol' East Texas dirt

Hamilton, Canada

Liz,
Another English and Classics major here. This was my second career change after 18 years doing a career in pure sciences. At least you and I could come up with some great names for new hybrids...LOL and Brugcrazy can paint them.

All we need now is a resident Postie who will expresspost brug cuttings.
