Looking for cumin (Cuminum cyminum) seed

Does anyone have any cumin seed? This is about the last herb that I am seeking for my 2002 garden. I have seeds for just about anything you could want, so name your price and let's trade. :)

Dave, silly question here. Doesn't cumin seed come from the corriander plant when it goes to seed? I may be way off here, but thought someone told me that one time.

Shirley

No cumin is 'Nigella sativum', very much different from Coriander/cilantro.

Dave, Cilantro was what I meant. My BIL had me plant it for him one year and I didn't keep it picked and had that stuff coming up everyplace in the garden for about three years. I don't like the taste of Cilantro myself, but do use a lot of Cumin. Sorry about the mistake here, but my feeble brain is so mushy just waiting to get all the plants into the greenhouse. I think I might make the move next week. Whew!!! Will have light coming into the house again.

Cilantro is called black cumin. I know that is not what you are wanting though.

I looked more into this... There are indeed a lot of different plants that carry the moniker of "cumin".

Well, what I want is this: Cuminum cyminum of the Apiaceae family.

You can read about this herb here: http://www-ang.kfunigraz.ac.at/~katzer/engl/Cumi_cym.html

Dave,

I'm checking germination percentage on my batch right now. If you still need it in say 2 weeks..give me a shout.. I'll know if this seed is worth mailing or not.

You might consider the spice section of the grocery store. I bought and grew some from whole cumin seed, purchased in a local grocery years ago.

They need light to germinate and do not tolerate transplanting well. Just so you know.......

Thanks, Chris. I just might try the spice jar. We do have a spice jar with whole cumin seed (although it's starting to run out, thanks to my turkish recipes) :-)

Hi Dave,

Germination test is successful. I got 70% germination. Have you grown cumin before? I found that seeding them flat on the surface worked best. Maybe they need light to germinate. I got fasted results that way. And since they strongly resent transplanting, it was easy to take the "just sprouted" seeds and plant them in individual peat pots for transplant to the garden later.

You are welcome to some. Let me know if you still need.

Chris
