red spider lilies

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

do these need a dormant period?I have some growing since last year, they are in the house for the winter.Should I have let them go dormant?Did I screw up again?

Paxton, FL(Zone 8a)

The ones in my yard usually do go dormant. Not sure if they died back this year. A while back I noticed they were still green.

These two links should provide additional information as well. I have quite a few of these in my yard. The green foliage is up (and stays that way from the time that the bloom fades until after winter is over).

Well ,that explains it!Now I have to talk them into dying back....LOL

lagrange, GA(Zone 7a)

They die back here about the start of summer and then they bloom in early fall. Then the leaves will put out and stay green all winter. Mine are outside and they have started to turn yellowish to die back.

Well, for the past several years I've broken every rule with these plants. When I get sick of seeing all that green, I just cut it back. And they bloom just fine in late Aug. Sept.

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

I too cut back the green leaves in June, and mine bloom in August.

Agapanthus,

Why does the green bother you? You're the first person I've heard of saying that and now I'm curious. :)

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

Smilin...I don't think ist's the green so much as how the leaves get all straggly that's bothersome and unsightly.

I just dug up some more of these at an abandoned house in the middle of nowhere AL. I just love them. I could have dug another 2 hours and still wouldn't have made a dent in all that was there. I love them.

Lucky you, Carla........they are breathtaking in masses at the end of the season, aren't they?

I will, just this year, have an opportunity to really see their beauty in my own yard. I just planted some last fall. Can't wait.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

I wanna see mine bloom!!!Just one tenney ,weeney, bloom!

Hampstead, NC(Zone 8a)

"eyes" has it right, they just get so straggly. I have my eye on a patch I spotted last year. There are some houses nearby, so I'll check in with them to see if ok to dig. Love free things!
