Can all cannas be grown as marginals ... or just the "water cannas"? I'd like to try one in my pond this year. Any suggestions on a variety that would be Ok grown in a pot set in the pond. I'd like something that has colorful foliage. I'm not too fussy about flower color.
Canna for water??
I tried last year with my bengal tiger, and others said they did it, but mine just sat there. Never grew, and certainly didn't flower. But others did it, I just missed something I think.
I think there is something called a "water canna" that is especially for growing in a pond. Eclipse should know, he has lots of cannas.

Susan, there are certain canna that are classified pond aquatics....look more like orchids. Phaison aka Tropicanna and Sunburst Pink can both be set in pots and placed in the pond and perform grandly. Both have very colorful foilage, the Sunburst has pink flowers, of course, and the Tropicanna has schocking Orange flowers.....these two are your best bet for a pond. Start your rhizomes soaking, covered in warm water until the roots are fully developed, and the foilage is sprouting, set in pot and submerge in pond. Good luck, and enjoy!!

Cala, isn't the "water canna" the Thalia genus? I have T. dealbata (an unintentional gift from my neighbor when I collected her garden waste for my compost heap), and the foliage does resemble canna but it's definitely a different plant. I'm curious to know just how much water cannas can take, too (and if there are species that can be submerged in the shallow part of my pond)
Thanks for the link sis! tiG - did you read it? It says they need to be gradually adapted to the water if they haven't grown in water before. Sounds like a plan to me. I think I'll go canna shopping :o)
Poppy...you and Terry must have been posting the same time as me...see above...this is what I did, and it works!!

Yep, eyes, I posted, then when I came back realized we had all converged on this thread at the same time, LOL. Well, this is good news - I have some canna bulbs that I will try acclimating to growing in water and see how it turns out. Thanks everybody!
Thanks eyes - I did miss your post. That's what I'll look for - tropicana or sunburst. Are the rhizomes sold at home depot good quality? I haven't seen them out yet but I know they carry them in the spring.
Should be Poppy....if you don't find them let me know and I can spare one of each for you. You've done so much for others!

My pretoria grew like crazy in the pond and I pulled it out on the fall, put it in a bucket and it's growing in the house!
thanks for the link MaVieRose.
u're very welcome Joydie :D!
in the Philippines, most canna grows wild in swamp. some home growers plant them in their yards too. they plant and forget it so to speak. they seem to thrive well on their own. i've seen them grow in all forms, color and shapes, some variegated too.
The bengal that I got from tiG last year did real well in the pond. I put it in a real large pot and set it in the top part of the pond where the water wasn't to deep.
