This is a side profile of the flower on Euryale Ferox or water gorgon. All parts are covered in sharp spines.Leaves get 5 feet across and ..YOU GUESSED IT!! They have sharp spines too! LOL

Now that is one Dangerous Beauty. Spines, I guess. Looks like something out of a Sci-Fi movie or The Little House Of Horrors. LOL.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Kyle ,do you grow that at your place? Its not hardy is it?

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

Crestedchik its an annual here must start from seeds each spring indoors about 7 weeks before June 1st.

Angleton, TX(Zone 9a)

Kyle, it is really pretty. I cannot imagine leaves that large on a flower. Do the leaves just lay on the water?

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

Brug nanny..they float just like a regular waterlily..they are intense royal purple on the undersides and large raised veins that are spine covered. The leaves are similar to Victoria waterlilies..they support a lot of weight.:-)

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

So ,you would start them like lotus seedlings ,in the house till its warm?Do they flower reliably? And ,big question, are they invasive?

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

Crestedchik they can get aggressive from seeds in zones 8 and up..but you have no worries in a garden pond. They are grown more for the leaves and less for flowers..sometimes the flowers open under water and never reach the surface..
Still an unusual plant and very interesting.

I love weird stuff....wonder if a plant like that would keep the swans and geese out of my pond......

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

Kyle, That is a beautiful flower but the outside is horrible. Wonder why it has such a wicked outer protection.
