I only have a small greenhouse and with all this seed starting the last couple of weeks...it is FULL. I even brought several sprouted flats and some plants into the house to make more room.
Guess there are just too many brugs, passiflora's and last minute late fall sales purchases that didn't get planted. Anyone else have a full greenhouse? Please tell me I'm not alone. Everytime I bring another plant or flat into the house I see that "funny" look in DH's eyes, LOL. My front room is really starting to look like a jungle. He doesn't dare say anything though since he was supposed to have made the greenhouse larger for me last year and never did.
Anyone's Greenhouse FULL?!?
my whole house is full, and I'm starting more this week. DH says it's a FL room or greenhouse for sure next year, and I'm not going to argue with him!
my gh has been full for months. or i thought is was but with daily rearranging there is always room for 1 more. lol.
Not completely full, but I figure in a couple more weeks we will be bursting at the seams (need to pot up the rest of my tomatoes and peppers, and I know I'll have some flower seedlings that will need to be divided and potted into bigger pots. Trying my best to time it so that when I'm truly ready to burst at the seams, it's time to start moving some things out to harden off.
Glad to hear you're going to get your greenhouse tiG!!!
farmgirl I have also rearranged every day, and even bought lots of pot hangers to hang pots from every empty space. There just isn't an inch of room left out there, no matter how much I try to rearrange now. LOL
Terry thats part of my problem, transplanting seedlings. I managed to find room for "just one more flat" but now there is no room for a single pot left. I keep telling myself, well just wait for 5 more weeks to sow anymore seeds. Then I can start setting plants out. I have too many seeds that should be started earlier. If I hadn't already had the greenhouse more than 1/2 full going into winter I wouldn't have this problem. Last year I didn't heat it and the very few tropical plants I had I just brought into the house. This year I just had too many to bring in the house so filled the greenhouse up and turned on the heat. HA! They have been coming in now anyway, weather I like it or not.
Feeling a bit better knowing I'm not the only one. :)
By the way...what ya'll got growing in your greenhouses?
Wow!!!!!is there room in our greenhouse..well, Liz, should I answer, or should you..both of ours are chockablock full of trops! It's good thing, as Martha would say, I have a little glasshouse(extension of the garden room, or vice-versa???) Seeding has been my main occupation for the last few weeks..but you're quite right about the organizing and reorganizing of plant material...on and on it goes! Little did we know ..purchase one or ttwo plants, then it mushrooms into????? anyhow it's fun, and it's my sanctuary! ELaine
I agree Elaine - if you're not bursting at the seams this time of year you're just not putting your heart into it. You've obviously forgotten something outside or you've forgotten to repot something you brought in last fall. You're missing something. I just took a perfectly happy hedychium, sawed it into quarters and voila! 3 new gallon post to find a spot for. It's what we do - we're nuts.
I started out with a nice neat green house with isles between all the plants. Now it's one foot in front of the other(maybe you won't lose your balance and fall) and yesterday I was looking at the big pots of brugs to see how many little pots I could set around the top of the big ones. I too took empty hanging baskets and set pots in them and hung from the ceiling, but can't hang too many or it will shade the seedlings!!
And the bad thing is I keep planting more and taking more cuttings. Then there are the experiments.........
DH is definitely getting worried about me taking over one of the 36X96 green houses!! They have 14ft ceilings, can you imagine how it would look with a brug alley down the center???
Sounds like you guys are at the point I will be in another month or so. I won't fire up the heater in my little greenhouse until about April 1st, but meanwhile, my basement and shed are filling up with domed flats under lights. As of last count, I have over 40 flats filled. Some were planted to cellpacks, but many are broadcast in containers, so they will GROW when the are ready for transplant. By mid-April, I'll have all the shelves full in my greenhouse, and more on the floor underneath them and the racks overhead. I can stuff a lot of green guys in my little greenhouse!
Hehehehe
So nice to be in good company.
Hey Susie...how can I convince DH to let me have just one greenhouse that is 36x96 with 14' ceilings? I keep trying...although he did buy me a new heat mat Sat and told me I'd better set that one up in the house, LOL.
Yep, I've got little pots setting in and around the top of all the big pots too. Sure is fun though and I've got some great new to me seeds/plants this year too! Can't wait to see them grown this summer. :)
Jody, I wish I could tell you how, but he still won't let me have one of the big green houses, his excuse was that he needed it for a "paying" crop, lol.
I LOVE IT!!!!!What do they say about misery loving company? Many of you know that my plants winter over in the dug out space under my house. I have plants stacked up also. I think there were about 440 last time I counted and I might have missed a few. Little ones I have set on the spare spaces around the big ones, hanging as many as I can without stopping the light on the others. I now have them in the aisles and have to tippie toe to get down the aisle. Now, I am having to suspend my hose from the ceiling now as I can no longer drag it down the aisle. I am taking cuttings and haven't the vaguest idea where they will go when they are rooted. I have bunches in my kitchen window waiting for pots. They are way past the point of needing to be potted. Maybe we need to form a plantaholic annomymous club? Do you think we are breathing too much carbon dioxide and it is having a "green effect" on our brains?
WE tramsformed our screened porch to a 'greenhouse this fall and it was fairly full then. However, I have been bringing in cinder blocks and two by fours and making extra spaces for seed flats! I may have to bring some of the plants in the house so I will have some more room if we keep planting.
Schmetterling: Ah, yes, the invasion of the seedlings! I think my mother set up tables & lights out in the Red Shed so that he could regain his place at the diningroom table! Every year, as my need for seedling space grew, I'd begin sneaking flats onto the end of the table, until there was barely a place to sit down and eat! We had begonias on the beams, nasturtiums on the table, gladiolus on the coffee table! By the time it was safe to plant outdoors, we were eating on TV Trays!
lolo you guys are too funny,,,i just went out to check on my babies and the temp is low here so i moved them closer and closed off one side,,,,,susie,,,ahhh a bigger greenhouse
hehe if you don't watch it your brugs will take over ,,,
lol all we need is a grass skirt an some music.......
ooooooi found my st.johns an lemon thyme coming up in my garden,,,i am now looking for anything green to bring inside my greenhouse,,,,,help i need therpy, lol what time
does the group therpy start
Elaine - do you still have the Queen E2 deck chair in your greenhouse? If you do you need more plants. My chair is long gone. Have to walk sideways to come in and back out. I'm starting to see the light though - the heat is off during the day! My DH will be dancing when my next hydro bill comes in.
oh gees and i thought i had it bad. i have a 65 year old 19x23 divided into 4 beds and one of them is just for the stuff we keep in the yard. last year i had the bright to seperate ALL of the aloe I had and now they take up another whole bed i and desperatly taking these things to the local mkt to sell them as fast as i can i still have about 12 seed packs to plant yet + more things i want to order. now i just hope it gets warm so i can evict all the squaters back to the yard so i have room to to transplant all the seedlings into 3inch pots
Liz..the deck chair is out for now(I tripped over it!)..one injured person in the family is enough! My passionvines are on fishing line all over the ceiling! they grow faster than I can move in the greenhouse! that's for sure! today, I started pots and flats of assorted morning glories(man.what have I got myself into??? Elaine
Pretty cold out there tonight with the wind Elaine - better fire up the heater.
All of you are too much...LOL. Well I guess I'm at the right place for sure. My house is full of plants and I mean every room with good light and still I keep planting seeds and taking cuttings.
I'm off today to buy more lights from Canadian Tire. Liz My brug seedling pots are everywhere and still more seeds sprout each day. I have to put up more shelving with lights to accomodate them until the end of May when they can go outside. I want one of those "Brug Alleys" like Monika, but mine will be in the front garden.
My family used to thing I was "MAD" until my oldest daughter wanted her apartment balcony full of plants. Now she has told her future mother-in-law how wonderful I do with plants and her mother-in-law wants me to landscape here garden at the new house. That means I need to sow more seeds ASAP.
I have my grand daughter hooked on plants and now when she visits she goes to the plants under grow lights and picks out what she wants. Her mother always manages to kill them though. I tried to offer my grand daughter (she's three) some of my common plants, but she knows them by leaf now and picks out the tropicals. I guess I should not have shown her pictures of the plants when they bloom. She even has favourites and many of them she helped me sow last year.
I hope I'm grooming another gardener here...LOL.
When I do gardening and work with the plants I'm in BLISS!
Joydie
yea!!!! get them hooked young. my family has been growing plants for 3 generations some of my earlyest memorys are in the greenhouse pulling weeds and getting geranium cuttings ready for dad to stick.
3/1 we fired up the GH and moved the Brugs out there that I had on my sunporch over the winter, DH spent yesterday rearranging over and over again. When he finished he did manage to find a 4 foot space on one of the tables to plant the veggie and flower flats.Last year I had four 8ft tables to put flats on and this year I just have a four ft space. He's already talking of extending the GH.
Snow my Dh has been talking of extending my greenhouse for the past 2 years...I stopped holding my breath, LOL.
I may not have to worry about not enough room now :(
I had to go away for a week and DH was to take care of the plants in the house and the greenhouse. Well...it got to well over 100 degrees out there during the day he didn't turn on the fan or open windows etc. before he left for work. He just didn't know he was supposed to. This was the first week really that it has been warm enough to heat it up out there that hot. The plants fried :( He didn't check on them for 2 days and by that time they were already gonners. Almost all the brugs look dead, black or transparent dead leaves, not to mention the dwarf crepes, one of the passiflora's and lots of seedlings.
On the brighter side, guess I've got a bit more room now though. The worst part is I have to go away again probably in about a month. Hope it's warm enough at night then to at least leave the windows open. If not...the house will definately look worse than a jungle, I'm not taking any chances next time, LOL. Poor DH, he really does try.
"Ahhhh, Jody, I am so sorry. That is so sad!" I would have cried and still be crying a week or so later. By the way, did you ever get my email asking you if you still wanted Naked Lady bulbs? I can bring them to Roundup if you still want them.
Jody, What a shame. I'm sorry you lost so much. Don't give up on the Brugs. They may come back from the roots with some TLC.
Yes Elena got the e-mail, no I don't need the bulbs.
Thanks Snow, I asked on the brug forum and thats what Cala said too so I'm gonna give em a few weeks and see what happens. Some of them actually look ok and still have a few leaves so I'm hopeful for those. Others...well...it will have to be a miracle, LOL.
Thanks Jody. I will plan on bringing some of those naked lady bulbs to the Roundup plant swap in case others want some. I had completely forgotten that we had ever discussed your wanting them until I was cleaning out my older files of email and there it was. I am so sorry about that!
I hope some of your plants survive the disaster. That must have been really sickening. Maybe you will have more to come back than you are expecting now. I hope so.
Awww, Jody - so sorry! I burned the leaves of a few plants a couple weeks ago - not nearly as drastic as what you're describing, but it taught me a stern lesson about how hot it can get in there, sometimes when you least expect it.
I think by the end of today, my GH will definitely be bursting at the seams - I just took a stroll, and several more plants have burst on the scene, and will need potting up. (What a fun problem to have!!!)
Hey, Elena - what color are your "nekked lady" bulbs? (the flowers, that is) Smiln32 gave me some last November, and I think those are the more red-colored flowers; I'm still looking for the pink/magenta ones if you have any (hint hint, LOL)
These greenhouses are like looking after small children.. you can't ignore them for a minute or they get into trouble. During the weeks before I can set things out, I have to fuss over my greenhouse like a mother hen. I only have a window fan in there, so I have to keep an eye on the temp all the time. I'm constantly watering and misting, or some darned thing.
I've had many mishaps since I got my greenhouse, but usually not too serious. The stove has gone out on a cold night, and by the time I discovered it, the temp was 30 degrees in there...but they all survived! I've doused a couple of potted begonias with fuel oil...they didn't survive! I once misted some plants with my DH's bottle of ospho (sp), and that was definitely tragic! But, as Jody says, once you get past the disappointment, it's just more room for the other plants!
I hope to be in my greenhouse with the heater going in another couple weeks. "Until then, keep your stick on the ice and we'll be thinking about ya!"
