Its name was Sternenzauber, something like Star magics. The parents were B. suaveolens USA Rose x B. suaveolens Rosa Traum. It had huge flowers, 36cm long with a strong fragrance. Dr. Preissel declared it of no value; already too many whites. After such a destroying judgement, I threw it away. I regretted this already so many times and today, I cannot understand myself that I had let him have so much influence.
Whats your opinion about this hybrid, Kyle?
I'm not Kyle either - he's the taller one. But couldn't you recreate it? I do like whites - they look so wonderful at night.
I really like whites too. I love to go out and night and watch the leaves growing up, check the flowers....but i guess it you have 10-15 whites, you might have enough. Monica, i am so glad for all you have shared with us. i'm going to do that 5 gallon bucket with some, just gotta figure out which ones get the tallest, i think eclipse said candidas and versicolors.
Arlene Aureas and versicolors get the tallest for me..Candidas are kinda slow and very branched.
Monika...I love the whites at night too..I think the flower shape was very unique...a really different white...I LIKE IT! To bad you listened to others about keeping it...if it means something to you...then you keep it!!Thats the way I feel. If I feel good about it..it stays in my collection..may never go anywhere else...or on the market...but I still keep it. :-)
Eclipse, thanks for the info...i would have thought versi X aurea would have made a tall plant too, guess you can tell i just got my first aureas and versicolors last fall, got some of Brugman's last summer that have aurea/versi in them...
Speed of growth and earliness of flowering is the most important trait to me. If something doesn't flower in its first year of growth I rarely keep it, although I have made one or two exceptions.
I liked this hybrid, I thought about repeating the cross. But I have to raise all seedlings to make sure, not to miss this special....if it will be again in the cross.
Monika ,I think its a shame when someone thinks our creation is not worthy of recognition.Thats wrong. If it brings you joy,its worthy,no matter what some who we respect might say about it.I'm not thrilled with whites, but some are gorgeous,as is the one in your picture....
I like whites & I don't don't think they should be tossed aside so quickly. Sure there's lots of whites out there but I bet they can always be improved on. Sheesh ... how many yellow daylilies are out there? Has to be zillions - all unique in their own way. If I ever came up with a gorgeous white like that one I'd be "tickled pink" :-)
