Monika, it is beautiful and so many blooms. Are your plants in 20 gallon pots?

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

They are planted in 20l pots with lots of holes, so the roots can run out into the garden soil. I think a gallon has 4l, I am not sure. It would be a 5 gallon pot if Iam right.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

if that's 20 litres, it's 25 gallon, right??

Angleton, TX(Zone 9a)

I would have never thought that a large brug could be contained in a 5 gallon pot. Do you replenish the soil in the pot each year and cut the roots back or do you just place it in the ground and let the roots find their way out into the soil. The one that I have in a large pot is now mostly roots with little soil. I am just trying to understand exactly what you do. Sorry if I am a pest.

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

Its wrong tig, only 5 gallon. I remove the pot every spring, check and remove all dead roots, cut the rest a little bit and set the plant back into the pot, fill it up with fresh soil and place them in the ground. I do this in early spring so the plant has time to root again.

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

5 gallon does seem small for a plant that size. I suppose if the roots can grow out into the ground your able to get away with a smaller pot. It also doesn't make my back ache as much thinking about moving them in the fall. What a gorgeous plant that is.

If there were not any holes for the roots to grow outside, a pot of this size would be indeed to small. Cultivating this way saves your back.

5 gallon works much better for me :o) I was wondering where on earth I'd find 25-30 gallon pots at a reasonable price.

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

We used 25 gallon pots in the eighties, almost broke my back. I cultivate my Brugmansias this way for almost 15 years. You also have more space in the winterquarter.

Monika - I see you have re-inforced, staked the trunks. Do you use re-bar ( steel rods)? Is that to keep them from swaying in the wind?

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

I just can't stand it anymore....I am dying of envy.
This one is also very very pretty and now on the top of my wish list.
I think we're all going to be planting our brugs directly in the ground with 5 gal pots.....I know I am.

thanks for the inspiration Monika

There have to be three wooden poles to each tree, taller as the stem. They are tied on to them to avoid: swaying in the wind and unrooting when the top gets larger. Two years ago, there was no need. No summer, no thunderstorms but the poles were all the time present to grab 'em when necessary.

So where are you taking us next Monika? We're sitting on the edges of our chairs in anticipation.
I'm sure glad that you are telling us all this now instead of after we pot up all our brugs. Saves us from having to redo everything.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

I am so thrilled to know it's really 5 gallons!! I could never get my DH to dig a hole for a 25 gallon pot! LOL!! I'm so excited:)

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

do you keep the poles with them winter and summer? are they driven down into the ground past the pot?

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

Monika, Thanks so much for posting these pictures. I now have hope that I can grow a large plant in this cold climate. Showed DH the pictures and he says he has some 5 gallon plastic buckets he will cut holes in.Now I just need another room added on to the house with a 9 foot ceiling to store them for the winter. LOL

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

The poles are driven outside the pots into the ground, as deep as possible. I will look for pictures to show you.

More of the most beautiful brug alley in the world.

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

These do not die in the winter snow??? or are they in pots??

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL Donna............. did you get mesmerized by the photo and forget to read the posts?

Donna Dear,
The pots are removed from the ground before the winter arrives.
