Deleting Deleted Items

My computer seems to have developed a problem. I have Outlook Express set to empty the Deleted Items folder on exit (Tools-Options-Maintenance-Empty messages from the Deleted items Folder on exit), but it seems to have stopped doing that. It seems to flash as if it would if it could but it can't.

I can't remove them myself, as when I click Delete I get the message 'The server does not support manual deletion of messages'. One of these deleted items has a paper clip next to it and I'm pretty sure that's something I don't want.

Any suggestions?
