cuttings in medium

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Here are the cuttings in the medium. I had to improvise. I wanted to use Agar, didn't have any. I went to get the water absorbing crystals, Bill had given them to someone. I ended up using sand, liquid fungicide and a plant growth hormone. I covered the container with a piece of clear lexan to keep the humidity up and placed them on an 80*F heat mat. I'll keep you posted on how they progress.

Looks good - are you taking tip cuttings of everything you have? I see EP and P+C labels~

I have Jean Pasco, Whiskers, Species, Peaches and Cream and Ecuador Pink. I wanted to try Cypress Gardens, but I ran out of room. I will ask my neighbor for baby food jars and go to the supply house and get agar and try some more things.

Wow it work like this.

Very impressive!!! Your going to have Ecuador pink out the wazzooo.
Jimminy Crickets as they say.
Keep up the good work and keep posting on how everything comes along. What kind of growth hormone are you using by the way?

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Promalin. It's a combination. One ingredient is Ga, I can't EVER remember what the other one is. I will have to look today when I go in and write it down.

Cala, I hate to show my stupidity, but what is Agar? Guess I have to ask these questions to learn.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Brugie, It's a culture growing medium for petri dishes and in-vitro tissue culture. It's derived from some kind of sea vegetable and is like gelatin, but doesn't mold. It will set at room temperature and doesn't require refrigeration. It has a very high protein content.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

can you start seeds in it?

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

In the agar? Yes you can start anything in it. Agar is the best medium to use when soaking the seeds in colchicine or anything you want to affect the genetics.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Glad I asked. Not that I'd know how to use it if I had it. So, where do you go to purchase it if one is interested? I like the sand idea myself. Have plenty of that around here. Looks like your sand will work just fine.

Cala,
What's colchicine?

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Glory, colchicine is derived from the autumn crocus colchicum. I first learned about it when hybridizing daylilies, it doubles the chromosomes in a seedling.(embryo)
Brugie, you can order online by doing a search for agar agar (not a typo) Sometimes you can find it in speciality markets and health food stores, vegetarians use it instead of gelatin. This would be food grade and probably okay for rooting cuttings, but can be expensive. Scientific grade is really expensive, but is pure.

Thanks again, Cala.

Thanks Cala

Cala I am curious. What are the average daylight hours in your area during winter. In Germany its 7hrs getting slowly longer. On 21. of March day and night hours are equal. This has a large effect on tropical plants and on early cuttings.
Young sprouts under artificial light are weak, the tissue to soft. The brugs start growing in Mid April and my experiences are, that April cuttings outgrow these winter cuttings and become healthier plants.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

It's daylight here by 7am and getting dark around 6 now. We are far enough south that we still get strong winter sunshine. Our day and night will be equal March 20th or 21st too. I did have trouble with cuttings of both brugs and passifloras in December, they would rot instead of rooting. The new growth on things now is very strong and my passifloras are budding. I don't use any artifical light in my brug house.

I have to wait a few more weeks in setting cuttings to root. In Dec. til end of Jan. daylight begins at about 8.30 and getting dark at 16.30 - 17 hrs. The daylight is getting longer after 5. Jan by 4 Minutes every day. But even sunshine (if there is any) does not bring any growth. The light defiency is too big.
