Flower mutation on Jamaica Yellow

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

Monika, I am sure you have seen this mutation before on aurea Tuffino..it seems Jamaica yellow does this alot on certain branches..in certain years. This is the first year my Jamaica Yellow has had these.

Seems like last year someone posted a picture like this of their JY flower. Being I'm a year older now I can't remember who it was.

Snow...I thought someone said they had this happen too..I don't remember who it was either!

I remember - what everyone called Shredded Jamaican Yellow after a whole lot of brug-mutant comments.

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

Liz, yes, i think Rich posted it, had gotten from glory.

Brugcrazy has one - thanks to the generosity of you people.

Kyle,
I'd post a picture but I'd have to start a new thread.

I have seen it before. This seems to be very common on certain hybrids, others less. White Bouquet has a whole bunch of this shredded flowers last spring. Later flowers had been ok. The breeder, G. Koitzsch, told me that he has never seen it before on White Bouquet. The hybrid is about 10 years old. Its almost the same as with my arborea. It deceided to have double flowers for while, but never again afterwards.

I have seen that mutation a few different years on my Jamaican yellow and I find that most often it is just a few flowers and not all of them on any one flush.

My Shredded Jamaica Yellow has buds forming. Can't wait to see what the flowers look like.

Kyle and Monika,
This is really a special phenomenon you both can tell about, with shredded or double flowers showing up from seemingly nowhere and then disappering again leaving no trace ... :)

I am curious to know more about it *lol*

Was it only certain branches, that formed these flowers?

Do you have any memory of the weather circumstances during forming of these branches, that put out these flowers?

Was it possible to take cuttings of the branch pieces holding the leaf nodes, that put them out?

Were they formed in a particular month or year?

Well, I ask and ask *lol* It just makes me wonder a thousand things, because of the "certain-years-thing".

I try to establish, if the hybrids having shredded or double flowers as an inherited possibillity under certain climatically conditions or - if these mutated flower-types occured simultaneously in both Germany and USA and the weather-types doesn`t match - if there was other propable reasons?

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

Tonny, Mine only had one branch with many flowers that did this..and only once in many years. Not sure what causes it..but I don't think that if I rooted cuttings of it that it would continue this way.

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

i dont know if it would continue or not.
only 1 of the 4 branches from the initial Y'ing produced mutated flowers. They were also the first flowers it produced for the year. i called gloria to ask if she had given me something she didnt mean to because it was so unique looking. after they finished blooming, the entire plant, including the mutant producing branch, prodcued normal jamaican yellow flowers for the rest of the year.
if i remember correctly we had a wet spring, but i dont think thats abnormal for here.
if it does it again this year, ill clip the branch and try to root it just to see if it will continue with multiple flushes of mutants
jen

I did plant the branch that had the mutation on it and didn't get a true shredded again..what I got was a petal that wasn't completely joined. I also sent Rich Sanders a cutting of this branch. When his cutting bloomed it looked like something from outer space. LOL

Bumping this one for, Tweet.

Brundidge, AL(Zone 8b)

I am wondering , Did it still have a fragrance ?

Ellabell, GA(Zone 8a)

I had several strange ones this fall. I figured it was the sudden cool nights that caused it.
Here's one.

That is just too wierd, how all of a suden we are seeing all of these.

Cape Coral, FL(Zone 10a)

Thanks Poppysue, I feel better knowing others have this kind of weirdness with their JY's. Here I thought there was some kind of genitic damage going on! Mine did an entire flush of these split but not quite shredded blooms.

Mesilla Park, NM

Saw your post and this happened to this white one that I have, last year and this year, only on one side of the "Y". It is not completely open yet, but will take more photos tomorrow if it opens up more. When I started putting some of the Epsom salt, was blaming it on that last year, but the other two I have did not do that. So, I don't know what happened.

I'm having them as well on my JY and also anotherone. Forget which one. Thought it was from the extreme heat when our rains stopped.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I've never had this happen to any of mine. Would like to see it happen to a dark pink one like L'Amour or Butterfly. Bet it would look pretty good.
