Wow eyes I think we can call you the canna queen. All I had this year was the plain red and red with the lime colored leaves. But I do have a Tropicana this year (thanks to a DG buddy ).I had forgot how much you love canna's eyes.You will have to take pictures of them all so we can see them.

It is hard to beat the color of cannas in the garden. I have Tropicana, Red King Humbert, some kind of pink, some kind of yellow, some kind of red and new this year are two dwarfs, red and yellow that I haven't planted. How do you keep the bugs from eating the leaves real bad? I have used seven dust but it doesn't seem to work well. Maybe because I am not using it right as I don't want to get any on the flowers and kill the bees and butterflies. I know about the worm that eats a whole through, but my leaves are chewed on. Overnight, it seems.
....that's slugs, Roz.......give 'em a beer party and invite some toads!!

OOOHHHH! you guys have so many!I have tons of un named red,plus black knight,bengal tiger ,tropicana,and stuttgart(if it makes it)I am dying for some new ones,but one of the ones I want is Cleopatra,can you guys tell me, is it as fickle as I hear.I heard, even if I buy from a reputable dealer, that there's still a chance it will be just plain green.Is this true????
I'm getting excited. Haven't raised cannas for several years. This year I'm starting out with Princess Di, Valentine, Constitution, Journey's End, Louis Cottin, and Red King Humbert. My list is so small compared to most, but hey, got to start somewhere. Hope you guys will post some pictures this summer.

Roz, in Mississippi and also here we have something called leaf rollers. Try putting the diatomaceous earth around the BASE of the plant. They crawl up, roll up the new leaves and eat holes in them, and when the leaf grows, it has a row of holes in it. (I'm sorry, I'm not really good at describing things, didn't do good in technical report writing either!!)
CC,yes Cleopatra is fickle, sometimes it will be all green, then suddenly go back to red and green striped again, the flowers will be two colors on the same stem and sometimes different colors on the same bud spike or blossom.
I have Cleopatra, Tropicanna, Bengal Tiger, Tropical Rose, Angel Dream, dwarf sallmon, King Humbert, Yellow King Humbert, Wyoming, City of Portland,Primrose (ok, memory is gone now) and at Home Depot I bought Rosever and a dwarf pink one.
Yep, Susie is right about the leaf rollers...also aphids can strip your leaves, too. Dratted bugs!

Eyes, do you ever get pollination on your cannas? I've only had a couple that have given me seed, but I've never tried to pollinate myself either. Just the critters do the work around here. Am going to try myself this summer though.
I sure do, Brugie.....by mid summer I should have seed from most of them. I'll try to save some for you guys that want them.

I've only grown them from seed one time but had great luck with them. I hope I can get something neat this year, but of course, won't know until I see it bloom the next year. It is just fun to try pollinating and of course, I have to throw a lot of hope in there too.
Now I can add some Scarlet Rib to the list...My bed just keeps gettng bigger and bigger!! I have planted some gingers, and amarylis, Criniums, Crocosmia, Red hot Pokers. and a corn plant in the bed for added visual impact.

Sounds like it will be eye catching. My main bed with cannas also has datura, mandevillas, (red, pink, and yellow), iochromas, brugs, lilies (various kinds), columbine, passifloras, petunias, justicia, and soon will have a banana plant, blue ginger,and crossandra species. There are also a couple of Bluebird Rose of Sharon, one at each end. I know there are other things in there, but can't remember now what is where. I might put some snail vine and corkscrew vine in the mix someplace. Have so many different kinds of vines that I don't know what to do with them. It is fun though, isn't it?
Gee, I didn't know there were so many cannas. I have just one at this point. I grew it from seed that I got in a trade. The package was labeled Hawaii.
Hey Brugie.....I never thought of Petunias for the Canna Bed.....hmmmmmmn, that's a very interesting idea!! Now where in the world did you get Blue Ginger???? :o)

Eyes, I got my blue ginger or rather am getting it from Logees. I hope I can grow it. Never had one before.
