Sooo excited!!

Feeling like a child at christmas!! Just ordered my 1st digital camera, oooooooooooh. Should be delivered tomorrow - can't wait.
It's going to be so frustrating though because i'm really busy for the next few days and i won't be able to play with it, LOL!

I am looking around for one, but so many to choose from, which camera have you bought?

Middlesbrough, United Kingdom

Good for you! I look forward to seeing the piccies!

Castelnau RB Pyrenée, France(Zone 8a)

I've gone for the Nikon 885. Looked at all the specs and this one seems to have the features i was after (and some i'd never thought of, lol). Mainly wanted one that could take close-ups as well as standard shots and small/light weight. Fingers crossed!!!

Hey, good for you, I got one for Xmas this year, and I've been clicking all over the place!!!!!!!! Hubby bought me a 'foolproof' one,as I'm a bit of a technofobe :-{ but can't wait to add pics to my journal as the plants grow and flower.I'm only up to page 20 on the instructions, I couldn't find those either ! until my son told me that they were on the computer, then of course i had to find the file, ooohhhh , will i ever get the hang of these things? but it's good fun trying at least.

Castelnau RB Pyrenée, France(Zone 8a)

It's just arrived. Wow, the size of the instruction book alone.......!!!!
Now i've got to be at a meeting, and i want to play. Ggrrrr!
Oh well, at least it's here. :-)

Castelnau RB Pyrenée, France(Zone 8a)

Took some pics and rushed to see what they'd look like on screen. **** 'puter won't take them. Can't get camera and 'puter to talk to each other. Even the card reader i got keeps asking for another disc and they only supplied one with it. So pooh :(
Spose i should've known. It took me a week to get my scanner to play ball. Such is life :-(

Castelnau RB Pyrenée, France(Zone 8a)

Well at least it's not me. There's a known problem with the version of the drivers I was sent and my version of Windows!! So Nikon are sending me a new CD, which they say will do the trick. Hmmmmmmmm, not counting my chickens, but fingers and toes crossed.
Why do i keep falling over??LOL ;-)

Helsinki, Finland(Zone 4b)

Pilomel, why do you have a card reader? Can't you transfer the photos from the card from the camera? I transfer my photos like it..

Castelnau RB Pyrenée, France(Zone 8a)

Completely new to digital cameras, but a friend suggested that a card reader would be a good idea so that i could play with stuff on one card, while still having the camera ready for action. So i realise now, probably just a luxury rather than necessity. Looks to me as if a second battery would be a better investment - the charge doesn't seem to have lasted long. Something else to get used to.
Would be good if i could get ANY photos onto my computer! The new disc with drivers and software still hasn't come from Nikon - well it is sunday today, so no post.
Do you collect any theme of stamps in particular? Old/new/both?
Hilary :)

Helsinki, Finland(Zone 4b)

I collect animal and flower stamps =)

Hmm.... How many batteries do you have ? I have 8, and they're all rechargeable, Nickel metal hybrid batteries. I also have a good Uniross charger and got 4 rechargeable batteries with it :) - I used over 20 normal batteries before I got those. gosh :/

Hellow Digital Camera Folk!: Just discovered the UK Forum! I see some familiar faces, or rather read some familiar handles!

I wanted to mention that I, too, have been having problems downloading from my digital cameras. We purchased a new hard drive that has WindowsXP, and it will not recognize my cameras, nor will it load the software to do so. Actually, I was able to download the software for one of them, but it will only download two or three pictures at a time before it drifts off into la-la land and I have to stop the download, delete the pictures I've downloaded, lest I download the last three again, then reconnect and begin the process again...quite frustrating.

I have owned the second camera since last fall, & haven't downloaded a single picture from it...very disheartening. They are both Kodak cameras, and I have visited their sites that assure me they are both compatable with XP, and they even offer updates to the software that will make it all work...to no avail!

Before changing systems, I had many pleasurable hours taking picture with the first camera, downloading, then editing them. I have wonderful photos of my garden for the last two years, but I fear I'll think twice before taking any pictures this summer, unless I can get this resolved. Are any of you running the new WindowsXP?...WZ

Castelnau RB Pyrenée, France(Zone 8a)

I'm still Windows 98SE. Apparently that was my problem with the Nikon CD. You can't win!! Still i'm hoping what they send will do the trick.
That's awful that you've had all that time without being able to use the cameras properly!! Surely they've got to give you more help? Just not good enough.
Been really enjoying your pictures, so you'll need to get it sorted out before flowering season, or think what you'll be depriving us all of :(
At least i've still got 35mm and a scanner, so if this doesn't get sorted it's going back.
Hope you have some joy with yours soon Weez

If you can, get Windows XP, it is very useful when you're working with the photos and sending them by email. Also lots of other nice new things and different looking IE - and whole WIndows if you want =)

Hi, Evert: It's funny that you recommended purchasing Windows XP after I gave it such a bad report concerning camera downloads! I do have to agree with you concerning some of the features. If you happen to have a camera that XP recognizes, it couldn't get any easier. It is quite simple to download photos off the web, and the picture storage system couldn't be simpler. When I DO download photos from my old camera, I can use Windows Explorer to sort them in album files to keep track of them. I did that on Windows 98, as well, but this is much simpler.

Philomel: I have another sad tale of woe concerning my old astro scanner. I was quite happy with it, but my new hard drive will not accommodate the parallel connector it used, so it has joined the pile of hardware from my old system, and I have purchased a new USB connected scanner. NOTHING has been easy with this new system. When I hooked up my new printer, I loaded the programing and it would not work properly. When I went to the Hewlet Packard site, it told me that loading any software that was not specifically designed for XP could cause the printer to malfunction... so, I uninstalled the original software and downloaded the online version, as they suggested. It's working now, but loves to spit out blank pages from time to time...ah, the woes of new technology! I just keep hoping that they will work all the bugs soon...WZ

Evert, Having enough trouble trying to get hooked up to a fixed price internet connection. The company i've tried seems to have such a poor service and keeps crashing my computer/disconnecting etc etc. Will have to deregister and go back to dear old BT! Hope i can delete all this rubbish satisfactorily!! It all just takes so much time i haven't got. Can't face battling with gettin XP to recognise all the stuff i already have. So that'll have to wait - sounds good but....

Mark, did consider all the options, but wanted to go for a small light weight beast - the 995's not quite so portable and same resolution. 885's macro is 1" - have to make do with that.
Am also replacing my 35mm outfit. Again going for light weight. Almost certainly Minolta Dynax5 (it's diddy but i've only got small hands), which seems to have v good reviews and if i decide i need a more substantial 2nd body (camera of course lol, mine's too substantial already!) can go for the Dynax7 at a later date.
I've got 2 bodies and a range of lenses to trade in, so hopefully that won't be such an outlay.

BT are fine with a 14.99 package for anytime and no problems for me with them.

XP is c**P although I have it. friends have already uninstalled it. I had problems with my printer, digital camera stuff, flat bed scanner, modem. DONT DO IT

Mark

Castelnau RB Pyrenée, France(Zone 8a)

Just found your post WZ - we sent at exactly the same time, LOL!! Yes, this puter games a hoot isn't it? You just think you're mastering it, getting along fine, then decide to be brave and go for something new and it cocks the whole thing up and you're back to square one. Well praps square two, but certainly not square ten where you'd like to be!!

Thanks Mark. As soon as i've got a minute i'm going with the BT package. Had it all arranged before and the cable co. phoned the day before the line was going to be changed back to BT and told me their package was only £10 a month. So I cancelled BT and gave them a try. BAD MOVE! Still at least now i know going back to BT is the right thing.
As for XP, after all i've heard from you and others there's no way i'm chancing that!! (sorry Evert :))

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

philomel: I think my problems are just a result of a sad attempt at being on the "cutting edge" of computer technology, when I still balance my checkbook on an old Victor Calculator and still mourn the loss of cyclemens in artificial sweeteners! There are some good features with XP, but I think you would be better served with something else until they come out with the "New Improved Windows XP". My Windows 98 was pretty reliable, but it had it's problems too. It's like an old car...you know where to kick it to start it...I just don't know how to start a new car!..WZ

Castelnau RB Pyrenée, France(Zone 8a)

Nikon now reckon that the problem is that my USB is not compatible with the version of windows that i have - therefore the fault of my computer supplier.
So i'm phoning Evesham tomorrow!

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Philomel: that is what we Colonists would call buck passing. It always aggrivates me when no one will take responsibility for a problem!

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

My digital camera worked great when I was using win98 but the new system has win2000 and my drivers withe the camera would not allow me to load the pics from the camerea. They sent me another cd with the new driver and now it works but recognizes the camera as being a different model than it really is! But it does work! What I don't understand is why the patches and drivers are not always available to download on line. It would save a lot of time for the consumer and save the makers the expense of sending out the cds.

Castelnau RB Pyrenée, France(Zone 8a)

Well, it seems that my system is at fault, but Evesham won't take responsibility because i admitted that my flatbed scanner works on USB

Seems i can install Windows ME (not upgrade - the whole thing, with all that entails) with no guarantee that it will solve the problem. Or I can give up on my USB for camera/slide scanner and use other ports for a card reader and slide scanner.

Hmmmmmmmmmm

Next move a different card reader!!!!!!
