Newbie to Brugs w/Few Basic Questions

Dayton, OH(Zone 5a)

Hi!

I'm new to these, but I have about 7 transplants of different & unknown varieties that I recently acquired. First, what in the preferred mixture in which to plant these? Is there a general light preferene, or does each variety have its own requirements? Any other basic advice on keeping these alive before I figure out how to better take care of them long term?

Thanks much!

Welcome, Morph. there's a lot of good stuff info around in here....you should think about planting in the ground, and taking up in winter... I think Eclipse does this with some, can't remember for sure. some kinds may over winter for you...come back from the roots.

Morph, yes planting in the ground is easier in the summer to take care of them. Remember when they are in active growth, Fertilize, Fertilize Fertilize. And of course, water!! You will be pollinating and starting seeds before the year is out, lol.

Welcome Morph, You can put your Brugs in the same potting soil. I use ProMix but everyone has their preferred potting soil and I'm sure someone will jump in here with their method. They like large pots as their roots grow quickly and lots of fertilizer once they have a root system. Someone with more experience can give you some good advice as there are Brug grower pros here. You're in the right place for expert advice.

What's the best fertilizer for brugs and how do we know when they have a good root system? Gonna buy me some of that brug food as soon as I get my first brug baby. To celebrate.

I like Osmocote time release to be sure they get a constant rate of fertilize. I like the one with minors. Once a week in winter(mine are in a green house) I use Master Blend which is like Peter's or Miracle Gro water soluble.
To check the root system in smaller pots, I tip them onto their sides and if I can see roots thru the drain holes, I know they have a good root system. I can check cuttings this way without pulling them out of the pots. There are lots of ways to fertilize and care for your brugs. Try several and see which fits your schedule.

Good to see you in here Morph. Hopefully some of our Brug experts will be by to answer some of your questions before too much longer. Personally, I like a week root system. Makes em easier to pull up out of the soil at the approach of winter, but I do let some over winter outside as well.
