LAST YEAR I TOOK SOME SEEDS FROM A PURPLE DATURA.
IT WAS NEXT TO A YELLOW ONE , WILL THESE COME OUT PURPLE
YELLOW AND PURPLE DATURA
That's a question for Tonny, but I think they are "self fertile" and doesn't matter what they were close to.
Cala's right. The purple and yellow are self fertile.
thanks a lot
They are self fertile :) However the position of the pistil in relation to the anthers occationally cause, that D. metel don`t pollinate it self good enough to form seeds :)
So sometimes they do, sometimes they don`t. So your seeds could be both from selfpollinated flowers and a cross between the two :)
Whereas the problem of self pollination in D. wrightii is, that the pistil is much longer that the anthers it is the contrary in D. metel. The pistil is often short and the anthers can be 3-6 cm above it. Especially in a cool period of the summer, the anthers don`t crack open very well, so it takes a humblebee or another buzzing thing to shake the pollen down on the pistil ... :)
I have not much experience with crosses of D. metel, but I think, that a cross will come out yellow in the first generation, but in the second and thirth generation you can exspect all kind of forms in between yellow and purple :)
If you for example in the thirth generation discover two plants with purple on the outside and yellow inside, you could cross them to stabilize this color combination. It is not sure, that you get stabile plants allready by this cross, but then you can repeat the cross one more time and sometimes that is enough to get them so stabilized, that they start to come true from seeds *lol* :) It takes a heck of a time *lol* but sometimes it is worth it :)
sounds like fun
is it possible to cross 2 species of datura
