hybridizing with culebra

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

Brugman, did your seeds take, and has any one seen crosses with culebra X anything?

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

Arlene..Tommie Lockwood in the 70's hybridized with culebra as he was the first in this country to get that special plant. The offspring never came out with the characteristic split flowers, but some did have the narrow willow like foliage.Culebra is a mutated plant so its very hard to work with on a genetic level. The pollen is about 85% defective...so it takes many crosses to get good seeds. This info from Tommies Research .

Get movin Arlene,MORE POLLEN!!!!!

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

85% defective, that makes me feel a little better, brugman pollinated 5 or so blooms for me, they all came off. wonder if any have stuck for him.
well i said that wrong too. i guess defective pollen shouldn't effect pollinating the culebra itself.

If the pollination barriere between the two Brug groups could be broken I dream of adding these leaves to "Ida". Her leaves are can get to 45-50 cm long and it sometimes take a little efford to locate the small flowers *lol*

Eclipse, Do you know, where I can order the publication of Tommie Earl Lockwood? I have a reduced edition (a few outsingled chapters), but I would love to study his entire publicised materials. I have asked around in the botanical library in Copenhagen, but they couldn`t come up with an answer, that I could use :)

Arlene, maybe Eric or Monika are better to predict, how the flower shape is inherited in Brugmansia crosses, but my theory is, that if you hybridize to obtain the culebra flower shape in a cross, you will have to backcross to culebra, - if this doesn`t help, backcross the previously backcrossed plants etc. (Monika mentioned the same formula for hybridizing for a double pink and it could just work for corolla shape too).

Arlene,I pollinated Charles Grimaldi with the Culebra pollen that you sent me.I have two pods.Problem is,these blooms were also being visited by my honeybees and Frosty Pink and Becca Lynn were blooming nearby.I can see that if I want to control my crosses I will have to bag the blossoms.

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

G2S, so you pollinate one and have 2 pods? way to go! guess you'll have to grow them all up to see!!!!! did you mark the one with culebra pollen? i did notice that the bees seemed to like the culebra, but then again i had a lot blooming and they liked a lot. Also, i found that you can plant them straight out of the pod. have probably 30-45 that have come up so far. let's see, december to february..... how big are your pods?

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

i am thinking if you pollinate very early, brugman does before they open, and take the pollen anthers off that will help keep something else from pollinating them?

Milton, FL(Zone 8a)

Arlene Culebra was used on both of these plants. The pods are between 4 and 5 inches long. There was also a pod on
the Becca Lynn but I didn't notice it and in my zeal to get rid of yellow leaves.....ah well.Maybe next time.It is a real sinking feeling to realize what you have in your hand is a seed pod and not a couple of dead leaves.

I'm going to work on the same type cross, but with another pollen donor. Hopefully Culebra X L'Amour. I'll do it over and over until I get it right. I'm like Eric. Get my mind set on something, even if it is wrong, I'll try to prove it can be done. Hope you get some of the Culebra characteristics in your seeds from C. Grimaldi, JT. Good luck.

congrats, g2s, hoping that culebra stuff worked!

Tonny...Tommie Lockwoods Thesis is available from Harvard University back east..it was $100.00 US many years ago...probably more than that nowand not sure if they can reprint it at this time. Its thicker than a phone book.

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

g2s, forgot to tell you i have a bunch of baby red bud trees, just a few leaves on them, coming up, and a few from last year i'll put in pots for you if you like.

Eclipse, I hope they can. It will be a lot more worth, than 100 $ for me. I will try and contact Harvard University about it directly :)

The culebra I have are very easy to set seed on. Don't worry about losing seedpods this time of year. I lost a few myself draging them in and out of the house trying to catch a few rays of sun. Hit a few seedpods on the side of the door. Rest assured, I did open them up and they did have seeds.

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

good for you brugman, can't wait to see how they turn out.

For what its worth Arlene, I am going to be using the Culebra as one of my primary seed seed setters this year.

I've accidentally picked a few pods and also cut a few branches intentionally. I've stuck them into the soil to root and several of them are still growing. Suaveolens White is the only one that's wilted and not rooted. I also wondered if one accidentally broke a seedpod with the penduncle still attached could one grow it on in an agar solution?
I can let the experts here do the genetics and hybridizing and I can do the propigation!! I love experimenting with propigating techniques. I've tried different mediums as well as different chemicals. I'm itching to try tissue culture and have a friend with a lab. She hasn't used it in a couple of years, but I'm sure it won't take too much to get it going again. With the brugs, I've tried everything from big stem sections to tiny tip cuttings. I will post photos shortly of the "lay on the side" experiment I did.

Well, I for one am working on a pink Culebra as well. If I don't get very far at least I will have some odd shaped leaves on some hybrids and perhaps a few pink aurea's with narrow leaves. Cala, are you planning on doing any protoplast fusion with sanguinea and aurea? If so, I want some of them...please....?

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Eric, if I can figure out the technique. I'm trying to apply it to what I learned in Chemistry Lab, lol. I knew I should have taken some botany classes!! Plus, it's been years since I've worked with anything like that. Got to get this old brain in gear.(make that a "brug brain" please)
