Datura Question

My double Purple Datura's which have been blooming, now where the bloom was are these two big balls. Are these seeds????? Dumb question but these are my first and I raised them from seeds so not sure about this. I am guessing they hold seed in them? do I leave them on it? someone help. :)

Yes, they are the seeds. Tons of em. I Leave them on till the get real fat and start to die. Let them dry out and whalla you now have a bunch of seeds to trade. Isn't it grand. I sent someone white one's this year and they came up in 2-3 days. Any leftover's you can send my way LOL ;-)

Have a bloomin good day.

Great! I figured thats what it was but thought I had better ask. Why do only some of the blooms do this? my double yellow's didn't?

there are different varieties of datura. also different ways the seed pod form. see for urself... form.http://www.erowid.org/plants/datura/datura_images.shtml

Thanks for the link. I couldn't find my bookmark on this.

Midwest, Datura is self fertile.

But is some species the anthers is positioned lower, than the pistil, so the pollent won`t go there automatical.

You need to take a small paint brush and put pollen on it and then paint the pistil with it, then you get pods on the yellow one too :)

Datura species which are highly self fertile are the stramonium-group.

D. inoxia, metel, wrightii have the problem mentioned above and has to be hand poollinated.

I hope for lots of seeds for you :)

Tonny I am sure I will have more questions once I try to pollinate them myself as i have never done this. First I have to get some more of your seeds up and going! Thank you again for giving me such a great start with these!
