I just got bought a pack of these. Instructions say to soak in milk or tea 12 hours. Is this just an alternative to soaking in orange juice? ... or is milk & tea more suitable for this species? Anyone know?
Passiflora coccinea - germination?
Sue,
I'm not sure about the tea, but milk is somewhat acidic, it can be use in place of oj. Myles did an experiment using milk recently with P. antioquinesis seeds. http://www.passionflow.co.uk/biclose1121.htm
You can soak P. coccinea seeds in oj, water, or milk, for 12-24 hrs.
Thanks Tim. So I guess there really isn't one that's any better than the other than. I'll give them a shot and hope for the best.
Sue,
I think the only thing that would work better would be real passion juice.
So THAT'S why my seeds didn't germ. Boogers.
Wonder if I can did them out of the trays and soak them (I've been waiting since Jan!)
Horseshoe,
Jan. 2002 or 2001? Germination is 2wks-1yr. Give them time, keep moist and give heat if possible, then sit and wait. DO NOT throw away the seeds.
I have some sown in Oct., about 60% germinated within 3 wks, found a few more came up 2 wks ago.
Tim how are you and when are you coming to VA?? Meant to tell you about the passifloras in the thread I started about vine lovers. There were some interesting pics there of beautiful passion flowers!!
Tim, thanks for the tip. I double checked...I actually sowed some of them in DECEMBER, not Jan. (also sowed a small pot in Nov...and still have it in the g-house).
Okay...I'll not give up.
Should I keept the flat on a heat mat? Or just let it stay on the tables in the g-house? (Nite time temps only go down to 50 in there) (unless they are on the heat mats, then the flats stay around 70 or so.)
Horseshoe,
It would help to keep the pots on the heat mat, 65-75 is best.
Louisa,
We are not sure when yet, either early May, or late July.
So far I've had germination from p.caerula, p.mollisima, and p.incarnata. They've taken 3 to 5 weeks after being soaked in OJ. I germinated them in paper towels sealed in a baggie. I keep the bag on top of my puter... wich is very warm. So far so good. I'm still waiting on some others and I just got a bunch of new seeds from Tim to try.
what a great idea poppy, I just got seeds from Tim, and due to take them out of the oj today. A just in time hint!! :)
