You do know that they smell of rotting meat when they flower dont you????????????????

Dowagiac, MI

Boy, you got that right. I have one in the garden, that I'd gladly dig up and give you in the spring. Right now, the ground is frozen.
My vet has one that he brings indoors every winter (they only stink when they are in bloom). As a result of wintering in the house, this plant is huge, so it blooms huge. This past summer when it bloomed, the vultures came.

LMAO..................... the vultures came!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think mine died.................... was outside for 3 years, they say that frost kills them, well it didnt kill mine!!!
Man did it stink when it flowered.................... atracted every meat fly within 3 miles i think!!

Dowagiac, MI

Last summer was the first year for mine. Of course, I put the darned thing close to the house. I couldn't imagine what smelled so bad when I was out there tending the garden. I thought perhaps something had died, and it was that voodoo lily. Mine was covered with garbage flies as well. Guess vulgaris is an appropriate name for that beast.

LOL................... you didn't know it had a smell like that before you bought it????????????????

Yes Vulgaris is an appropriate name for it!!

Dowagiac, MI

No, I sure didn't "They" don't tell you that in the plant catalogs. If they did, no one would buy them. Vet says they are pollinated by those files. I can think of all sorts of names for them. Carrion lily, Cadaver lily.
Road Kill lily.

Oh, in this country they tell you in the catalogues that they smell of rotting flesh................ I guess people buy them just to see if they do!!! LOL
Yeah Road Kill Lily is an excellent name for them...........LMAO

Love these plants, for the bloom not the smell,
just purchased 5 bulbs from Ebay. Small....won't bloom for 5 years. If you have one and dig it up....I would love to have it. Please keep me in mind.
Thanks,

Now you've got me curious. I have a neighbor I'd like to grow this near...how far does the smell travel?

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

LOL.......................... not that far Shannon!!!!
You really must hate them.....................................LOL

Katy, TX(Zone 8b)

Daughter and SIL have a real *%#*(*&%^ living next door to them. Claims he's a Redneck and proud of it. I would love to get this for them, not tell them about the flower odor but tell them where to plant it. He can't get any more obnoxious than he is but would love to have him hunting for the roadkill that is "stinkin' up the place".

LMAO

We are gonna have to start a thread about neighbours and how to annoy them!

(Zone 1)

Just lurking here this evening .... WHY would anyone want a plant that smells so bad? Must be some kind of Pretty Flower to have y'all put up with a smell that attracts Vultures and nasty Flies!

I must google and see what the heck this plant looks like .... I've never heard of it!

Lin

(Zone 1)

OK .... I have heard of Voo Doo Lily .... very pretty flower, but I think I will pass on having it in my garden .... with the heat of the summer I bet it would be really vulgar smelling. Should have known with "vulgaris " in it's name that it would be horribly smelly! LOL.

Noblesville, IN(Zone 5a)

I never found that mine smelled at all. I have grown it for 5 years.

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

Well if yours doesnt smell, then you got the wrong plant!!!!
Its Dracunculus Vugaris, not VooDoo lily!! Some VooDoo Lilies dont smell at all........

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Well thankfully mine finally died as I had it planted next to my front door. LOL!! Boy was I shocked when it bloomed!! Few times I've ever been glad something didn't come back!!

Mark...
I'm still contemplating planting this right next to my neighbor and then setting up some cameras to video the reaction when it blooms. Might even get me a T-shirt on some "best of" video show...
