Clivia

Porterfield, WI(Zone 4b)

I have a clivia I bought at a master gardeners sale last spring. It's good sized, and healthy and growing. I keep it on the dry side, because I was loosing a few leaves, and it is happier dry. Can someone tell me if I need to give it any special care, and what I should expect from it bloom - wise. Thanks, L

Clivia or Kaffir lily blooms best when potbound. You should repot it only if it is so potbound that it only retains water for a day or so.

To encourage blooming, clivia needs cool temps (40 to 50 degrees, if possible) and just enough water to prevent wilting for about a month in the fall.

During the growing season following the bloom, the soil should be kept moderately moist but never wet. That means, water well, and don't water again until the surface soil appears dry. If you have a fair sized plant, once a week should be enough. Fertilize sparingly at half strength while it is actively growing.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions.

I think that the cool temperture is not always needed - I took my Clivia out last summer and we had very warm and humid weather - then I saw that there's buds coming... cool, they were the first flowers for about 15 or more years.. :> - Photo: http://community.webshots.com/photo/31004241/31004890oXfTXhuTld
