scanner problems

My dad had a new mother board installed on his computer and the scanner is not working now.
The guy from the computer shop was at the house for his 35$ an hour, and dad told him it was still not working but he left and said that he needed to download something from the net.
he can not find the install CD
so I did search for acer 620u model scanner and downloaded drivers for it. when I tried to install them nothing.

I go into device manager and no scanner is listed.

It is plug and play so I unplug it and reboot and plug it in and reboot and it says that windows (98SE by the way)
has detected new hardware and it is a game port or something, I try to change the driver for it to the one I downloaded and it says that it is not for that.

any ideas.
