Anyone growing/collecting passifloras?

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I collect the passifloras and thought it would be interesting to see who is growing them and what they have. I'm not sending any out right now for trades, it's too cold. Many of the tropical varieties can't stand to be below 50*F for very long. Here is a list of what I have.
Coccinea, edulis, vitifolia, Constance Elliot, Molissima, Blue Botique, Morifolia, Foetide, Caureula, Alata, Incense, Lavender Lady, Purple Haze, Foetida, Caureula Alba, Incarnata, biflora, sanguinolenta, edulus flavacarpa, Byron Beauty, Jeanette, gracillis, Belotii

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

you luck woman!!! i have one store bought one barely hanging in there. Some that dave gave me from his garden and one cutting from tim!
Spider mites did a number on my plants this fall-I sprayed with bug spray-all the leaves fell off. I mist them weekly now with just water or a soapywater!!=[ Im going to buy a new on in April and try again!

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

NotMartha, when it warms up, I'll send you a couple if you remind me.

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

I have a couple that Tim sent me, they are doing well, I took cuttings of them and they have rooted and are sitting on my kitchen window sill, I will pot them up and put them outside when the weather warms up.
I also have a few that karma gave me last year, they are doing well also. I hope to get a red one this year.

I have lost a lot this winter. :( I currently have foetida, edulis, edulis flavicarpa, another edulis cross from Tim, Purple Haze, Jeanette, capsularis, Constance Elliot, a named but faded tag that is doing great, and some suberosa seeds being planted today.

I'm trying to grow them but this has been a bad winter for passifloras at this house. I have Coccinea, Caerulea, Vitifolia, Kewensis, Jeannette, Incense, Indigo Dreams, Belotti, Coral Glow, and have ordered Coccinea Maui, Quadrangularis, and Murucuja. Lost my Susan Brigham, Sunburst, and Manicotta. May not have spelled all of these correctly.

I didn't know all you guys were into Pass too! Have to go find my list. But Indigo Dreams - is that the deep deep blue one???

I need to check on what seedlings I have to include with my list, but right now I have somewhere between 40-45 species/varieties.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

WOW Tim, that's great.

Chipley, FL(Zone 8a)

Hey anyone, I bought some passiflora 'citrina' seeds to try. Any particular ideas on how to start them. I have a couple of passiflora's but never tried them from seed. Dee

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Tim,
I have Kewensis and can't get it to root. Any suggestions?

Dee, I have heard that you need to soak them either in passion fruit juice or orange juice before planting, but I'm sure someone who knows a lot more than me could tell you more.

Chardon, OH(Zone 5a)

My list - 'Amethyst', x belotii, biflora, caerulea, caerulea alba, capsularis, coriacea, foetida, foetida var. albiflora, incarnata, 'Incense', 'Indigo Dream', 'Purple Haze', quadrangularis, sanguinolenta, 'Star of Clevedon' and violacea form #3.

I also lost a few in the transition of bringing them inside to avoid the freezing weather and a few more when they dried out while I was on vacation over Christmas. Sorry, Tim, I lost everything that you sent!

Of course I'm making up for that because I just ordered five more from Elizabeth.

lagrange, GA(Zone 7a)

I have a yard full every summer. Wild that keeps coming back. Waldo the snake found a home in one.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

GRC, watch out for that snake, LOL.

I've used tea tree oil to help the passion vines root and also Ga3.

lagrange, GA(Zone 7a)

Greenville, SC(Zone 7a)

I have "Passiflora Incarnata" &
"Passiflora x Alato-Caerulea"
>Jim, The Maypops you sent last year didn't make it ( I don't think they had enough root to them ) I tried to save them but I couldn't ( So sorry :-(

Palmyra, VA(Zone 7a)

Hi Dawn,
Welcome! I see you decided to drop in~! :) I'm working on a few P. vitifolia cuttings, I'll save you one when they are ready, and will also save a P. 'Blue Bouquet'.

Brugie,
Are you taking too tender of a cutting, it will rots. Is the stem hollow, if so you will need to cut farther. Is the vine large enough for you to try layering it? I'm trying to propagate P. 'Byron Beauty' that way.

Dee,
Soak in oj or water over night, sow on top of peat/perlite mix, then lightly cover with the mixture or with sand. Give it some bottom heat, 65-75F.

Chipley, FL(Zone 8a)

Great Tim, thanks hope this work. Do you happent to have this one?? If not, and I am successful would you like to trade for one of yours?? Dee

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Thanks Tim,

My cuttings might have been too tender. Will go a little longer next time and see what happens. I just didn't know if I should do in soil or water. Have had no luck so far and may have to go to the layering method. I think I can do that if I don't start whacking away again.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Brugie
I first take about 6 inches of new growth from the main stems. This forces the dormant side branches to grow. I then let that new growth get about 8 inches long. I take a cutting above the last node closest to the mother plant. I've had great success with these type cuttings. I stick the cuttings into a small pot, water in with tea tree oil and put on a heat mat. I mist them every day, but the humidity in my green house is high and you may want to use the "mini green house" effect of a coke bottle with the bottom removed placed over the cuttings. I will take some photos the next time I do cuttings.

lagrange, GA(Zone 7a)

Iris I'm going to try again this year and see if I have better luck. I will watch and get them when they first emerge. I did get one to root and gave to a cousin in Denver. I used the method that Tim emailed to me.
Thansk tiG for the information on tea tree oil. I'll get some soon.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I've used the mini greenhouse before with cuttings and seeds. I'm going to go pinch out the growth point on some runners right now and see what I can get going. Thanks Cala.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

I have incarnata,a unidentified that I started from seed, and a Vititola from Tim(I love that one the best)I had murucuja, gracilis and lavender lady but something seems to have dug them out of their pots........

Palmyra, VA(Zone 7a)

Dee,

Yes, I have that one, wishing you success with the seeds. I haven't try to propagate it yet, let me see how I do with it. May be I can get one started for you, we'll see.

Chipley, FL(Zone 8a)

Thanks Tim, Dee

Santiago, Chile(Zone 9b)

Hi,

not long ago I saw a picture of P. Incense for the first time in the web and fell madly inlove. Can anybody tell me if they come true from seed? So far, I'm successfully growing P. edulis and P. mollissima sown early this summer (I'm in the southern hemisphere).

Thanks,

Ursula

Palmyra, VA(Zone 7a)

Hi Ursula,

P. 'Incense' is a hybrid, seedlings will not be true to parent.

Mount Prospect, IL(Zone 5a)

I just started some passafloras last week. I have antiquiensis, incarnata, morifloria, subpelata, Lavendar Lady and gracilis. I keep checking every day to try to see some signs of growth! I've never grown these from seed before.

I have 2 that Tim sent me seeds for I believe they are Edulis and Foetida. They are doing quiet well Most all the seeds came up, can't wait till spring to put them out. But as it's cold here I will have to keep them where I can bring them in.

Mount Prospect, IL(Zone 5a)

How long does it take for the seeds to germinate? I planted them two weeks ago and no sign of anything yet. I didn't plant them deeply, just on top of soil mix with just a little sprinkled on top to barely cover them. I hope I haven't killed them before they had a chance to grow!

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

djm, I think you need to cover them with vermiculite or Tim uses some kind of clay pellets(?) or something. I've had them take a year to come up, so patience is needed.

Palmyra, VA(Zone 7a)

djm,
Just give them time, I have some came up after 3 weeks, while others took over 6 months, and I'm still waiting for a few to come up sown over 9 months ago.

It has a lot to do with the freshness of the seeds, and the conditions. Give bottom heat if possible.

Mount Prospect, IL(Zone 5a)

Ok, got vermiculite and I'll pick up a heating pad tomorrow. Thanks for the advice, I'm glad to know it may be a while. I'm willing to wait then and I won't be hovering over the planter as much. Doris

Palmyra, VA(Zone 7a)

sorry, duplicate post.
