Growing with potted brugs ...

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

I know ya'll have talked about growing your passion flowers in the pots with brugs. I plan to try a few too. What else would grow well in the pots? I was wondering if Asarina would. I tried a couple different kinds last year and they didn't do squat for me in the ground. Do you think they'd do good in a brug pot without smothering it?

Poppysue, I think the asarina would do good. It does better for me in a container than in the ground. I've used diascia, sedums, coleus, jasmines, mandevilla(these look lovely growing in with a white brug)trailing lobelia, wandering Jew. I've got a big Ecuador Pink in with a Seminole pink hibiscus in a 25 gallon pot. I've got gardenias tucked under a Frosty Pink.

Tim mentioned to me that he doesn't think the passion flowers are such a great idea. All the fertilizer will produce more foliage and not much for flowers. I'm trying to think of tender plants that I wouldn't be able to grow in my zone normally. The jasmine & mandevilla sound wonderful - I've never tried either. How about potato vine (Solanum jasminoides)? Would that be too aggressive?

well, you could have the foliage growing out of the pot and spilling over. They can get real big, but I have been thinking of using my potatoes too, with a coleus for the middle plant.

What about Black-eyed susan vine, or Moses in a boat, or I wonder how the Gerber daisy would do??

I was wondering about the gloriosa lily too.

Oh, hadn't thought about that. I will have to put that in a pot with yellow brug and try it.

I hav a gloriosa lily in the pot with a yellow one, but I think I killed it. It was growing really good, then just died. They don't like a lot of water do they?

I used the blue torenia and it did really well. Spilled over the edge of the pot and out onto the ground. Doesn't get tall, but will hide the pot well.
