great seedling news

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

for me at least!! I was thinking I'd lost all ability to get seeds to sprout. I got very spoiled with a two week germination in the fall. FinallY!!!
seed sown 1-1-02 ? x butterfly is UP!!! I moved them off the heat mat the other day and put them in the back room, it's not cold, but just average light. I think I was overwatering them, using new soil for seeds and just couldn't get a handle on it. I am going back to Jiffy mix though, that's what I've done best with.

Congrats Tig, patience is the key. Lots and lots of patience, kind of like having children. LOL

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

congrats!!! now for the rest of them! that's what i finally decided, you have to do it how you feel comfortable.

Angleton, TX(Zone 9a)

I must remember that - patience, patience and more patience. I also got spoiled with some seeds that I planted and they were up in two weeks. It is now 2 1/2 weeks later and no other ones are up. When they don't just pop up, it makes you think that you have done something wrong. Patience, Patience!! I will remember that.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Congratulations TiG. Yes, patience is needed, lol. I have to sweep the green house floor lots of times to keep my fingers off the seed pots. (my green house floor is very clean)

Saint Petersburg, FL(Zone 9b)

Great job tiG

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

Congratulations tiG, I'm happy for you. :)

Cala, please come and sweep my greenhouse floor. The construction guys had to remove one wall to pour the other on top of it for the conservatory and I had to move hundreds of plants and they're making a mess all over my floors. One of them dropped a 2x4 on my fancy watering coil hose. :( He said he'd get me a new one. I need help keeping up with all of this mess. I know it is going to be wonderful when it's done but....

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Doesn't that mess just drive you crazy? I can't stand for stuff to be lying on the green house floor, but it doesn't bother me at all in the house.

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

Cala - you have big greenhouses - I can't tell anymore if something is on the greenhouse floor! Jeanne keeps saying she's cleaning up the GH - I can't clean it up without taking everything out. How are you people doing it? Actually - as long as it's not dead or has bugs on it, it's pretty well staying until spring. LOL

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Liz, the floor of my green house is black fabric stuff over a bed of gravel. If there are fallen leaves, old blooms or dirt, I sweep it up. I have a main isle down the center and the brugs are in rows so I can walk between them. I did give in and set trays of passifloras between them, but I can scoot them around as needed.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

My greenhouse floor is black fabric covered with cedar chips. Not a really good idea except that I can wet down the chips for lots of humidity. Otherwise, they do move around a bit after a while and I have to rake the path back up to level.

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

I have fabric, about a foot of gravel, another layer of fabric and then small white marble stone in my GH.I have to rake the path too in the middle since the stones tend to move to the side after a while.I'm itchin to get out there. Only a few more weeks....

Snow,
Is that thick layer(12") of gravel used for insulation?
I have the same floor as Cala...ground cloth and gravel on top.

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

Glory, DH put the gravel down to insulate because in the winter our ground freezes and causes frost heaves and also so nothing can grow up through it. We have a problem with moles here so this also makes it mole proof since they won't dig through gravel.

Snow,
What are frost heaves?

Saint Petersburg, FL(Zone 9b)

glory thats when the ground freezes and lifts up things that are not below the freeze line

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

Glory

You should move up here, Ohio, we'll show you what frost heaves are, it's when your tulip bulbs freeze up out of the ground from frost, they sit on top of the dirt, not in it.

Would you believe two seedlings up within last 2 days, patience!!! These are I x B, should be beauties!!!

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

LOL. It's also when you drive down the road to go to the store and you think you're on a roller coaster ride.

that's ok y'all...I think I'll pass....thanks for the info.

Hibiscus...my DH is from Cleveland OH but left there when he was 18 years... believe me that was long ago.:0)

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)
