Here is the phone number for the Calif. Dept of Ag. 916-654-0312 and the website (which I can't get to, sometimes it won't let me in)http://www.cdfa.ca.gov/phpps/pe/pgm.html
I talked with a lady in the agriculture library and she said she is pretty sure nothing can come in without being inspected, either by their APHIS dept or having a Phyto Cert. I'm going to call them in a little while and will let you know for sure what they say.

Well poo!! Tha't why I couldn't get in. I did get in once on Saturday, but couldn't get back.
I'll try to call tomorrow. I found a list of most all the quarantine things, I think seeds might be okay, but I have to call to make sure first. I'll let you know later, maybe tomorrow.
New info I called and they told me that there is some quarentines but not in all states. In some states they can be shipped directly some not. She didn't give me more info but I will try and see wich states it can be inported with no Quarentines,
Daniel
I just was on the phone with Liz Johnson for over 30 minutes. NO plant or cutting (even if just cut with no root) of ANYTHING can come into CA without being certified in your homestate before shipping. And that costs money.
Some seeds are okay, there is a lot of info here:http://pi.cdfa.ca.gov/pqm/manual/107a.htm and
http://pi.cdfa.ca.gov/pqm/manual/pdftable.htm
Brugmansia seeds and datura seeds are okay, the package has to be labeled on the outside of envelope "seeds" and what kind. And each packet should have a lot # on it for your own records, in case they ever have to contact you about it. There are many many seeds that cannot be shipped into CA, so be careful in your trades, I don't only trade brug seeds, so I will be very careful. You might want to bookmark the pages above, if you do a lot of RRs and such.
:( I'm unhappy, because I have a dear friend I promised a cutting to and now I can't keep my word. I just never realized that there were so many regs to deal with.
Thanks TiG for finding that out for me, I knew there were regulations on us as a green house industry, but wasn't sure how they applied to everyone.
Really I called and they told me that they had to be in quarentine but she never said that they couldn't come in. She didn't know what a brug was but I suppose they can check in the computer. Too bad, I have a box coming from North Carolina from a friend with about 2 cuttings of brugs I hope they quarentine them and then let them go.
Daniel
From what she told me, if they don't have a certification, they won't get in. I hope you get lucky. I can't send plants to you because I just can't afford the certification right now. Good luck.
How much is certification??
Never even heard of it, I didn't know there were so many rules!
The reason so many states have these regulations is becuse Fla, Ca. and Tx have large agricultural communities, they grow many solanaceae crops, tomatoe, potatoes, peppers, and all of these can carry and get virus from brugs. One infected plant can do massive damage to our food crops....thats why they are so strict.Think of a world without peppers, tomatoes or potatoes. Not a pretty sight! :-)
I certainly understand, just didn't know. and no peppers -- potatoes -- tomatoes --OH MY!!!!!! I'd never make it:)
tiG, thanks for taking the time to find this out. It certainly is good to know.I do understand why this is but also feel bad as I was going to send some cuttings to someone in the spring and now won't be able to. :(
~From the other side of the border. It was in the paper here last week that NO Commercial plants are being allowed into Canada from the Northern Oregon and California area until further notice. Even the mighty Monrovia is not allowed across. We are lumber up here. Apparently there is some sort of an oak fungus down there that will attack most hardwood. I guess it works both ways. Sigh - I hope my Tibouchinas made it through the winter outside.
There are also restrictions from importing plants and seeds from Germany due to the Oak fungus so be careful.

Are y'all talking about Oak Wilt? Oh, GOD that's some nasty stuff! There is no cure, but there is a pretty helpful preventative ~ just keep your trees WELL fed and WELL watered. We've got it about a mile from my house and will be installing drip irrigation around the two massive oaks and small clump that we have.
