an experiment

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Well, I couldn't help myself. I was in the green house, and to keep from cutting those seed pods, I decided to experiment with some cuttings. I've found that the little side shoots will grow if you cut the growth tip from the main branch. I cut some of the little shoots off and wanted to see how they would root. These are not tip cuttings, but the little side shoots, cut close to the stem.

Cool Cala! What would we do without you doing all this experimenting for us?! I'll have to see what I can cut off for little side shoots now. I'm trying the tiny log method with Okrah ... I mean Ocre. Keeping my fingers crossed.

I decided to try the tiny log thing too with my enchanted double white. So far no new leaves, but they aren't dead yet either.

I dug in my "big logs" today to see if the sprouts had roots. They didn't but the sprouts are at least 3" tall. The "log" itself had roots on it.

Cala......being new to all this...what kind of knife or whatever do you use to cut the little shoots off......I have lots of little shoots on mine!!! And what kind og soil did you use to pot them?

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I used the pruning shears I got at big Lots for 2.99. They are great, and sharp!! I used Pro-Mix for the soil.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Cala, for your seeds do you use the regular pro-mix or the seedling mix or mix your own? I think I have a tendency to over water the seeds in the pro-mix.

me too Brugie :(

I've gotten used to the plain Pro-mix. Mine are on the heat mats, so i'm not so bad to over water them.

I checked the cuttings today, they are rooted!!! They are calused really good and have 2 or 3 little roots on each cutting. These little cuttings didn't wilt like the bigger ones. Now we will see how long it takes them to "Y" and bloom.

With all these experiments you trying - you're going to have them coming out your ears. Just don't tell us you're lawn mowering them.

Liz, not yet, but I may have to take the weed eater to them, lol. I figured to start more of the Ecuador Pink because it's good to use for color and I do love it. The others I figured we had so many new ones that would need the different varieties surely someone will want them.

I tried rooting two side shoots that broke off my shredded white during repotting the week you started this thread Cala. Both are doing great. I stuck them in small pots, cut the big leaves like you did and have kept them moist but not wet....they have rooted very well!!!!!! Now I will be taking all my side shoots off and potting.....LOL.....I am going to need more yard space...may have to rent the neighbors' yards:)

Sharbot, that's why I love experimenting. I have lots of brugs, especially CG and suaveolens and don't mind cutting them up a bit. I figured some of the seeds from these I would try experimenting with later on. I don't want the white seedlings and from what Monika says, they will all be white from a white parent. (did I get this right?)

I am still reading and learning that thread about the crosses.....I am concentrating on my cuttings and seed starting......I am still a beginner yet....but I hope to be able to start the crossing soon!!!

Cala-I must confess you impress me at every turn of things. I sincerely hope you get some of Monika's better hybrids and can start offering them in a few years. Not to mention the seedlings from those crosses.
