Need a greenhouse?

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

I remember some here mentioning that they wanted a greenhouse. Just saw on Daves forum that he is selling his. Check it out.

It's a nice green house too.

It sure is nice. Just wish I lived closer to Dave.

Does anyone in zone 5 heat a small greenhouse? I'd be interested in what your winter heat bills amount to.

Franktown, CO(Zone 5a)

Brugie, I use gas heat and of course it depends on how cold it is outside. My GH is 14x14 ft and it can go anywhere from $50- $150. That is about 3 years worth of winters here in Ohio. The last 2 months bills were nothing but this last bill was over $100.

Hmmm...if it costs you that much to heat a greenhouse in zone 5, maybe I should just be happy with my new growlights. It doesn't cost us that much to heat our house, but then it's insulated also. Thank you for momentarily getting me over the "greenhouse envy" syndrome. LOL!

Joan,

I don`t know, if I write this in the proper forum, but in the end it has to do with our common passion, Brugs.

It is possible to insulate greenhouses too, off cause not as good as your house. I think that the expenses to heat it would be three times the house ... I know this from studying; how they afford this in Sweeden and in Norway (zone 4-6).

The Sweedish way is to start with building an insulated foundation 3 ft. deep, then place the greenhouse on the top.
If you use glass, these will benefit from being glued with silicon of the kind used for sail boats (less exspensive, but equal as good as any). During winter the inside should be insulated with bubble-plastic. If you instead of glass prefer 16 mm , clear, double canal elements of polyethylene, you can save buying the bubble-plastic.

The temps. don`t need to be much higher than 10 *C. for overwintering Brugs and some of them will also grow some and put out flowers by that temp.

That's some very interesting information Tonny, thank you. I would never have thought of building a greenhouse that way. I'm going to give that some more thought. It definitely would be easier to heat.
