I have these versicolor Ecuador Pink pods and was wondering if anybody thinks they are ready to pick. The stem has been this color for a long time, the pods aren't soft or anything, but the blossom end is getting a little brown color on it. I know, I've never been a patient person!!
need opinion
Cala, my eyes are too old to see detail....do you remember who the daddy is?
I'll let someone jump in that has experience with pods to answer your question Cala.If you're in dought though you can send one of those nice long pods to me and I'll be happy to check it over and let you know what I think. Hehehe :)
Snow, I'll be happy to share with you!! Those pods are at least a foot long. I've been good for a week, I didn't pinch, squeeze or cut on them!!! I can't stand it, though I don't have much room left to plant anything. When I take cuttings or plant seeds, I have to look thru the things on the heat mat to see what can be moved off. It's terrible looking at all these pods all winter and theyre not ripe yet!!
Arlene, CG is the daddy. I've got a Double white with a buc, and I'm going to save the pollen for when my EP blooms again.!!
Cala, Those pods will be ripe before you know it and then you'll see it was well worth all your patience in waiting.
That Dbl white and EP sounds like it will be a really good cross.
Calla....wait, it's not yellow 'till it's yellow! :o)
I know, but was wondering about the versicolor pods. I think Glory or someone said they don't always turn yellow.
Cala,
The seed pods I picked off of Whiskers was not yellow or soft and the seeds were very ready....now the ones I picked off the Insignis Frosty Pink were yellowish and I could feel the seeds inside. Can anyone else help out with this question?
Cala - do you have the Preissel book? He says about obtaining the seeds ... "in cultivation the seed is released from it's surrounding floury, fleshy, fruit wrapping as soon as the fruit is harvested. The seeds are like a three dimensional puzzle of two oval-to-elongated seed packages. You find this decorative way of arranging seeds only if you harvest them at the earliest possible time. After that the floury, fleshy, covering layer begins to dry out. The compactly arranged seed packets slowly loosen and fall apart. At this point the the fruit covering yeilds slightly to outside pressure. Brugmansia must be harvested at this time at the latest, as it is now that the first seeds will start to germinate in the fruit"
Huh. I didn't know that. I know it doesn't really tell you if your pods are ready. He doesn't say anything about the yellow pundacle thingy. I would guess that the yellowing pundacle would be the first signs that the fruit covering is starting to dry out.
i think it also says wild versicolors will dry on the pod and be spread with the wind.....
Cala, Wait till the pods shrievel and change colors.
Cala,
You heard the man...now leave them alone. LOL
Kyle...Cala is known for sneaking a peek in her seed pods.
Glory..I know the feeling..I have PERSUADED a few pods myself! :-)
Yes Kyle, but did you use New Skin to seal them back up or duct tape? :-)
Cala, I still grin every time I think of you and your seed pods. It might not be so funny if I ever get anymore on even one of my brugs. However, I've learned from all of you to try really hard to keep my hands off.
Brugie
i was in the green house experimenting today(I took photos) and accidentally broke a seed pod off the FP. I was good, I stuck the piece of the limb in potting soil and put it on the heat mat. All I did was give it a little squeeze.(I'm out of Nu-skin)I looked at the EP pods, squeezed them a few times, compared the penduncle to the other pods and put my hands in my pockets!! Y'all would have been proud of me. (then I grabbed the broom and swept the floor to keep me busy)
Good girl Cala, You will have so much fun when you get to open all of those pods!! Now that I'm hearing or reading that white is the dominant gene, how will those of us up north ever be able to grow on 50-100 brug seeds from a single pod just to see if we can get one plant with color? I sure don't have that kind of room even though I have nearly 3 acres.
I figured I'd send some seeds to everyone and let them grow on and see what we get. I know y'all will share if you get something cool.
calla ,stop pinching the pods, and does the new skin work???
CC, works better than the duck tape, lol.
