Has anyone had any luck setting seed to HG yet?

FSH, TX

I have tried numerous times and still have not been able to set a seedpod on HG. Has anyone here been successful setting seed to that hybrid? Any pointers out there? Eclipse, if anyone here has... I would have to bet you had a pointer or two on that one. I have heard you have a few nice double peaches of your own creation already. Please share your wealth of knowledge here with us.

Brugman,
I can't even get the blasted thing to bloom. LOL....maybe this year.

FSH, TX

Glory,
For what its worth I grew one in a pot and one in the ground. The one in the pot bloomed before the one in the ground, but the one in the ground grew much taller first.

Brugman
I think I will add super bloom to it tomorrow and see if that helps....is the flower worth the wait?

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

Brugmansia..this HG plant you speak of..is it Herrenhausergarten?? If so I only just added it to my collection. So can't verify anything as to its fertility. As to any double varieties I have now...they are all whites..no double colored hybrids from my crosses.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

Kyle, you'll find we abbreviate everything!! Eric accused us once (in fun) of being lazy. I think he's right!! we even abbreviate each others names:)

FSH, TX

Ahh, Eclipse, well that certainly would explain why I haven't seen any colored doubles with your name attached yet. Now I am wondering what the name of that fellow was who told me they had recieved a double in color created by you.
Gloria,
I must confess the HerenhauserGarten is extremely beautiful to me. So far though...I have removed the corolla's several times only to reveal that underneath the well formed skirts were immature green skirts that seem to stunt the growth of any pistal/anthers. I am hoping that at least some flowers from this hybrid develop somewhat normally so I can get a seed pod. If I can get just one Butterfly to cross to that hybrid I would be happy. Perhaps this summer will give me better results.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

wow, can't wait to see what that cross brings Eric!!

Could be, if you removed all, but the inner skirt ... I don`t know ... I am member of the German Brug forum and will try and ask around.

My HG arrives in March and I wanna know too. It will be too bad, if it turns out impossible to do anything with it ... then again, we love the challenge, don`t we :)

FSH, TX

Lol with Tonny,
Yes, it is the challenge that makes it all worth while and the seeds that much more valuable. I am going to try dissecting my next flush of flowers as they develop. Carefully removing parts of the corolla long before it exposes itself. It would be so nice to simply cross that one to a few different types of aurea's. Pinks, yellows...Culebra....Heck just a dab of Culebra pollen on an HG...If one could get so lucky....

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

I tried getting double pinks years ago by crossing Double white brugs to several pinks..not luck..some nice singles but double flowered seedlings are few and far between.People in the south have gotten seeds from Germany to bloom double peach, and a few double yellows.

Hopefully my White Pearl x Big, which are double white x apricot will be a double. Those are from seeds from Monika Gottschalk in Germany. White Pearl is one of her hybrids. I've passed the seeds around to quite a few of the members. Hopefully someone will be lucky. Unfortunately there are no seeds left.

FSH, TX

Yes, Eclipse...I have heard the same thing. That is why I have not even bothered with trying to creat any crosses to any doubles until recently. Still, I can dream. I figure as I like aurea's and I have mostly aurea's I will at least come out with some nice aurea's crossing them to doubles. Of course I do think that its within the realm of possibility as I have seen so many beautiful doubles in color. I want to try to get a few thousand seedlings from a double to a nice aurea pink variety and then work on it from there. Of course I think I may have a serious set back as I put almost all of my hopes this year in HG which has failed to produce any seeds for me. Now I have several HG and no seedpods. I do have a few other double whites, but a few thousand seedlings of those I would gladly trade for 200 seedlings from HG crossed to Butterfly. I tend to think that anything is possible if one just has large enough numbers from which to begin with. Of course I believe in luck or odds as well. The more seedlings the higher ones odds. I have proposed that it would be much easier to creat a double pink if everyone here were to grow several hundred seedlings from a cross such as Hg x Butterfly...unfortunately I now feel that perhaps I should have propagated more Candida species or some other hybrid to make these crosses with. Ahh, set backs are inevitable...but none the less I don't give up very easily. I would love to hear about your attempts and any pointers you may have. I must confess though that if you have had that no luck then I can not hope to have any luck without at least learning a bit from you. I must confess I have never attempted to even make a cross to a double until recently as I had heard how extremely hard it was to get a double in color. Still, somehow...someway I have gotten this crazzy notion into my head and now I refuse to give up till I have a double pink from seed. Preferably a double pink aurea, but a double peach aurea would be fine as well.

where there's a will, there's a way!

Brugcrazy,
I have one of the Pearl x big and it is doing good.

White Pearl x big, mine was sowed 29/12 2001 and have not sprouted yet? Maybe I did something wrong :(
Any suggestions, what might save them?

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Tonny, don't give up. I've just now got seeds coming up from November and December. They have a mind of their own.

Tonny, I have some that are 1 1/2 feet high already and some still germinating. Who knows???? Yours will come, don't worry. I had great germination with White Pearl x Big. We hopefully will get a double apricot. Wouldn't that be nice. And when they do sprout, they grow really really fast. I transplanted one to a huge pot and some others to 1 gallons as I have no more room anywhere. Soon they'll all be in huge pots as I'm hoping for a double bloom this summer. BTW, DH calls me the eternal optimist. LOL

FSH, TX

Eclipse,
Did you cross the seedlings from any of your Pink x Double crosses together or make test crosses? I believe you said you were lucky enough to create some double whites, but any information along these lines would be appreciated. Do you have any pinks that you test crossed and found out they at least still created doubles even if only white?

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

Tonny, mine were planted 12/26 and haven't sprouted yet, but they were also damaged in transit. I'm very tempted to peek under the dirt and see whats going on.

Just trying to bring this back up to the top in hopes that Monika might have had some experience with this one. I have just started a few of your Double seeds Monika and rest assured they are labeled as Double M---M stands for the hybridizer in this case and not middle, but most excellent.

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

I cannot guarantee that there will be double flowered hybrids out of this cross; but it should be. White Pearl is B. x candida flore plena x B. suaveolens Rosa Traum (Pink Dream). The picture of White Pearl can be seen in my book. Big is a candida with very large flowers. The influence of B. versicolor shows in the change of color, white with a touch of Apricot. The result depends on how strong the influence of the B. suaveolens part will be. Rosa Traum carries golden color in its genes. I had several golden hybrids in crosses with Rosa Traum.

I breed Brugmansia for so many years but I am still so excited that I cannot sleep when I see the first bud on a seedling.

Monika, The White Pearl x Big seeds you sent me are doing fabulous. One plant is already 1 1/2 feet high and growing fast. I am so impressed with these plants. I have shared these seeds with quite a few people on this forum, with your permission, and they all know that if they get a double, you keep hybridizing rights. Just wanted to mention that again as it is very important that everyone understands the copyright issues which include plants, pictures etc.

FSH, TX

Monika,
That statement is good enough for me. I will take your seedlings and make sure each and everyone blooms if I can get them to germinate. I will then cross these to other seedlings from that same batch and perhaps a few of mine if I get any that are noteworthy.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I'm waiting to just be able to say they have sprouted. The ones you sent, Jeanne, have only been in the soil since Jan. 28, so I'm not getting excited yet. I got a couple of seeds from Arlene that haven't done anything yet, but I dug into the pot and they are still there. Those are some big beans. Rest assured that if I happen to be lucky, you and Monika, well everyone here, will hear about it right away.

All of you in Tennessee and Alabama, I hear you might be getting some more bad weather. Hope it isn't too cold and snowy for your brugs.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

I had two of the 4 white pearl x big come up so far, one without a head, but I'm not pulling. They were planted 1-14.

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

mine were planted on 1/6, still no sign of life ; (

don't give up:)

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

I will harvest tomorrow seeds of Perlmutt x Ecuador Pink. The large seed pod is hanging since Aug. 2000. If it contains good seeds I will add some to the package.
Perlmutt is hybrid between aurea Gelber Riese and candida Esmeraldas.

Monika, you are an angel!

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

boy those sound like awesome crosses!

Monika,

Fandango is beautiful. All of your brugs are a site to see. I've been drooling today looking at your pictures.

Monika,
Your brugmansia are beautiful and unique. You should be very proud of yourself and all your diligent work.

I'm afraid my white Pearl x Big didn't make it. The postal service wasn't kind to them and smashed them. I tried to salvage them but too much damage was done.I dug into them yesterday to see if they might be ok but they were gone. :(
