Hello farmers. Well it's been quite a day. This morning when I went out to feed one of the horses was laying down and would not get up. I hurried and fed the others so they wouldn't be in the way, then got a halter and got the sick mare to her feet. She walked, layed down, I got her up and she walked more then layed down again. Finally I got her into the hay shed and she layed down by the haystack, at least now she had some hay under her instead of snow. My trailer is snowed in and driveway has snow walls too narrow to get the trailer through it, so I called my neighbor and borrowed his trailer. He helped me hitch it up and came down and helped me get the mare on her feet which at this point I could not have done by myself, and walk her up the driveway about 400 ft. to the trailer. I spent most of the rest of the day walking her in the vets parking lot between doses of banamine and something else, plus a half gallon of mineral oil that was pumped into her stomach via a nasal tube soon after she got there. The vet treated other animals between checking on her, finally put her in the stocks again and hooked up an iv line. When I left she had 7-8 liters of fluid and they were still putting more in. She will spend the night in a stall there probably hooked to an iv part of the time. The on call vet will keep checking on her. It was hard to leave but I had things to do here and couldn't really help at that point. Today was a beautiful day, the temp never got above 10*, it will be cold again tonight. We have had 2 nights of 0* now. I hope you all had a good day. Remember to count your blessings.
