I happened in at Wal Mart at the right time. Several years aago I planted MSF and fell in love with them. I was in Walmart this morning and asked if bulbs had arrived and they came in last night. They were still in overwrap and a nice lady offered to undo them and I found some MSF that was very reasonable. 10 bulbs for $2.50.
Tigridia - Mexican Shell flower-
OH MY Jim, I bought some last year for like 10 bucks for 3 or 4 of them... I'll have to run to Walmart, cept I was just there 2 days ago, and they had not yet put anything out, and I asked the garden guy (who knows me quite well by now) and he said in a week or so...
Pebble if you don't find them let me know. I owe you anyway.
i luv them-here I have to dig them up every fall!
Jim,
Do you know how hardy they are?
Tim
tim you could grow them i think its zone 7 and higher
I'm going to check in with my Wal-mart today, I hope to get some too......I like them so well would like to expand my bed that has them.
The squirrells have been smorgasborghing on all my tulip bulbs...I'm so ticked... everyday I come home from work and spot another bulb that has been devoured, the way I can tell is, they don't like the newly formed roots, and they must spit them out (visualize this: phitz phuph phiets, phtooey, aachhht - stringy stuff caught in their teeth...) but it looks like they must lick the roots clean, cause they are so clean and no soil formed on them) As much as I like the little guys, they are starting to get on my nerves big time.
mmmmm!!! Myabe if you bought the squirrells some corn...........
You've brought back early memories. tigridia must be one of the first plants i ever grew, was for my Brownie badge. What excitement watching the flowers unfurl and how exotic they were!! all fired up now to try them again this year. Thanks
Tim I think they would fly for you. They disappeared after about three years. I think the squirrels made a meal off them. I should have dug them not because of the cold but the squirrels.
Hey Al, the squirrels must like Mexican food. LOL
lol Jim,
I got a couple of bags last weekend, I will put them down next week, and sprinkle the top with BLOOD meal, heard our furry friends dont like that
tulips to squirrels are like a double fudge brownie with double chocolate ice cream with a fudge sauce, whip cream and a cherry to a chocoholic. :)
it is my first year with tulips and i planted them in containers w/some chicken wire type fencing over the top but under the mulch. and...they are in the porch. :)
someone ate my lily bulbs last year and that got me mad, so i'm pulling out all the stops with any bulbs i plant. :)
debi you are so right.
My friend in Mexico grows Tigridias. He has many cultivars, species and varieties. I haven't ever grown Tigridias, but I will try Sparaxis. It is quite similar but has smaller flowers. :)
I grew tigridia for the first time last year, both yellow and pink, although the yellow seemed to do better here. I will post a shot of them in the photo forum. I bought my bulbs from Central Valley Nursery near my home, and the brand name was Simple Pleasures, if that is of any help. I am anxious to see how they did over the winter, as I didn't dig them up. But then I don't dig anything up! Tough love!
Could these be grown in pots here in Fl? Bulbs don't like it here...in the ground that is.
I bought a pack two weeks ago, threw them all in an 8" pots, I found a few came out already.
I got a pack today at wally-world. What fun.... I love it when they get all the summer goodies out!
I found a box with 80 bulbs at Sams for either $9.95 or $11.95, don't remember. Never had them before - I think they like shade & like Caladiums I may have to dig them in fall?? They look so pretty & colorful on the box.
