Question for Chicken Farmers

Moorestown, NJ(Zone 7b)

I am hoping someone can shed some truth on this subject - my neighbor swears that the dietician at her job (she is a fancy restaurant manager), told her that chicken farmers cut the wings off live chickens and keep them in pens in order to lay larger eggs. She says that is why she buys "organic" eggs. I told that shouldn't have anything to do with whether or not they are organic eggs or not, but what they've been FED would make that difference. I thought also that the breed of chicken determined (for the most part) the size of the egg.......say, Guinnies (sp?) would lay smaller eggs than another type of chicken would.

Personally, I think this is hogwash.......I do know that chickens aren't real high on the "evolutionary chain priority list".......but I don't believe they'd be that abused or PETA would be all over every chicken farmer in America. Or, maybe I'm the dummy here. Someone -- enlighten me please.
